1 – Age of Empires II – “Wololo”
There’s no voice line in gaming more well-known than the innocuous chanting of Age of Empires II clerics. A combination of letters so powerful, a sound so transformative, a chat so mesmerizing that it can change people’s perception of themselves, and convert them into the most unexpected of causes, forcing them to betray family, friends, and country for an entire new lease on life. I’m just joking, of course, and makes “Wololo” so iconic is the ridiculousness of the mechanic surrounding it. Here’s how it works: a cleric will aim at a unit, shake its staff for a bit, and chant “wololo,” and that unit will convert to your side, fighting for you going forward, until it’s killed or converted back by another cleric. That’s right, the “Wololo” is so powerful that a unit can have its loyalty change as much as the players want to keep playing around with it. It’s just good, video game fun, and I love it. This is, hands down, the most iconic and memorable voice-line of any real-time strategy game ever made, and the one that gave birth to one hundred thousand memes.
