7 – Company of Heroes – “Watch your cover and follow me!”
Company of Heroes and Company of Heroes 2 must be amongst the real-time strategy (RTS) games with the biggest number of voice lines, ever. Each unit has dozens of voice lines for all kinds of situations. In my opinion, as someone who loves the franchise and has been playing it non-stop since the demo first came out, there’s one unit bark I have never forgotten, and it perfectly encapsulates what the game is all about: “Watch your cover and follow me”. For a game that built its mechanics on the foundational idea of having cover for your units, this single line, shouted by regular American infantrymen, is exactly the kind of thing I’m sure was said during the war, plenty of times. I know this one isn’t as funny as all the others, but I had to include it here!
6 – Command & Conquer: Generals – “AK-47s for everyone!”
Command & Conquer: Generals has to be the RTS game with the wildest faction design of all time. The GLA is a terrorist faction, and its arsenal is composed of terrorists (of course), a battle bus (yes, really), a rocket buggy, a toxic tractor, and the most iconic of all, an angry mob of civilians armed with pistols. Upgrade them, and you’ll get one of the most iconic voice lines in gaming history, with a heavy accent cheerfully yelling, “AK-47s for everyone!”
5 – Stronghold – “Not enough wood. Wood Needed!”
Another voice line turned into a meme because of the dirty, collective mind of the internet. Stronghold is one of the best real-time strategy games ever made, and one with the most amount of character. The vocal scribe in the bottom right corner of your screen is constantly informing you of the state of your affairs, praising you when your granary is full, and warning you when your own people dislike the amount of taxes you have imposed on them. He is also responsible for letting you know when you don’t have enough materials to build. A lack of stone and gold has nothing funny to it, but spend every piece of wood you have gathered from your forests and listen to him constantly say “Not enough wood, m’Lord”, or “Wood Needed”, or “More wood is needed”, and you can see why the internet picked this one up and ran with it.
