These Are The 12 Grand Strategy Games To Look Forward To In 2026 and 2027

Introduction

Grand strategy gaming is entering an unprecedented era of depth and innovation across 2026 and 2027, and it’s no wonder this subgenre of strategy games is such a fan favorite. Developers are pushing the boundaries of deep statecraft by blending complex economic simulations, dynamic character-driven narratives, and advanced geopolitical warfare to redefine what it means to lead an empire. From the early moments of Human civilization to the aftermath of a self-inflicted apocalypse, and well into space, the grand strategy genre is packed with high-stakes experiences that will keep you glued to the screen for months and years on end! Here are the 12 most anticipated grand strategy games heading to PC and consoles over the next two years.

HUMANKIND 2

Amplitude Studios is doubling down on historical 4X grand strategy with Humankind 2, slated to reshape the genre in 2027. This ambitious sequel deepens civilization customization with richer cultural progression trees while introducing dynamic environmental mechanics, where shifting biomes and changing climates transform your empire’s map across the ages. With an overhauled UI, refined visuals, and fan-driven gameplay balancing, it stands out as one of the most anticipated turn-based strategy titles on the horizon for historical players who want to create their own civs.

Total Victory: World Conflict 1939-1945

Set to redefine WWII grand strategy, Total Victory: World Conflict 1939-1945 delivers an ultra-detailed, worldwide command experience focusing on deep yet accessible mechanics like production, logistics, and, of course, military command. Players lead Allied or Axis powers across a realistic global map, balancing raw industrial output with tactical frontline division management. Total Victory comes from the same developers who built WarPlan and WarPlan Pacific, which were two excellent wargames that managed to balance fun and realism in equal measure, and became a fantastic entry-way for people wishing to learn the genre. I’m hopeful that Total Victory will deliver exactly on that, but on a much grander scale.

Systemic War

Developed by Play of Battle, Systemic War introduces a fresh approach to modern grand strategy by blending high-level geopolitics with real-time tactical battles. While there’s no release date yet, the game had a demo available a while back during one of those Steam Fests and played decently for an early build. The game simulates modern conflict across the diplomacy, information, military, and economy domains, incorporating macroeconomic models, currency fluctuations, and hybrid warfare mechanics. Players navigate global geopolitical escalation on a strategic world map before diving into tactical RTS command across real-world flashpoints like the Suwałki Gap and Taiwan. The game certainly sounds ambitious, and there’s also a 3D RTT that looks very similar to games like Broken Arrow and WARNO, to boot.

Caracol

Scheduled for release in 2026, Caracol – Wars of Religion in the 17th Century brings granular, turn-based grand strategy to the devastating Thirty Years’ War. Across a detailed map of over 300 European provinces, players balance pike-and-shot military logistics with national zeal, religious doctrine, and economic support from major trade centers. Featuring over 100 historical commanders like Gustavus Adolphus and Wallenstein, it promises an authentic, historical sandbox for early modern history buffs.
