Introduction
I was caught off guard by the Steam Party-Based RPG Fest, but I was also quick enough to turn things around and put together these 10 recommendations just for you. This is a quick list, just to let you know which games to look out for. Strategy games go hand in hand with RPGs, am I right? So let’s have a look at the best games to get! Hurry, the games on sale will only last until September 21st, and there are also a ton of demos to try!
Wartales
One of the best-selling strategy games of the last decade, Wartales gives players complete free rein to do whatever they want once they’re set loose on its low-fantasy medieval world. Explore, gather riches, survive, be a hero or be the villain; it’s all up to them. The turn-based combat is excellent, but the real meat of the game lies in the emergent storytelling and party management.
Mewgenics
From the creators of The Binding of Isaac and The End Is Night comes Mewgenics, a turn-based strategy roguelite with cats where players have to create a cat army through breeding the weirdest creatures in existence and sending them into stranger combat encounters. There are thousands of combinations of cats to discover; there’s a massive campaign, and over 200 enemies and bosses to beat.
Wildermyth
Wildermyth came out in 2021 from the hands of Worldwalker Games, a studio I don’t think had any other titles under their belt, and struck gold instantly with RPG and strategy players. You see, Wildermyth’s premise is that it follows the heroes over their whole journeying career, from the starting and struggling days to the high points and lows (yes, those happen!), and tracks them until they pass on to become memory. The game is built around the idea that these stories can influence the world and those that came after. The combat is simple, but the emergent storytelling is stellar.
Expeditions: Rome
While Expeditions: Samurai didn’t quite hit the mark for me, fortunately we will always have Expeditions: Rome, the high point in the series. If the high-fantasy settings of most other titles aren’t your thing, consider taking on the life of what’s essentially Julius Caesar, but not. Rome’s campaign will take you from your early days as a young buck and well into a respected and loved Legatus of Rome. Combat is amazing, the graphics are beautiful, and the campaign is loosely based on real-life History.
Baldur’s Gate 3
If I need to tell you something about Baldur’s Gate 3, then you have probably just crawled out of a cave, but let’s just say this is unanimously recognized as the best RPG ever made. What else is there to say about BG3 that hasn’t been said before? But if you never have, you’ll probably never play another RPG the same way again.
