Cheap Wargames To Get On The Steam Autumn Sale 2025 To Get Into The Genre (From Free Up To 20 Dollars)

From 5 To 10 Dollars

Panzer Corps Gold – $ 7.49

Arguably, the most content for your buck in this list, this beer-and-pretzels turn-based wargame has almost every single scenario and unit you would expect from a World War 2 wargame. I would highly advise you to buy Panzer Corps Gold if you’re on a budget, in favor of its younger, but equally excellent brother.

Cauldrons of War – Stalingrad – $ 7.49

Even simpler than Battle Academy and Atlantic Fleet, but a totally different beast, Cauldrons of War – Stalingrad is the continuation of Cauldrons of War – Barbarossa, where you play as the two most cheekiest men to ever sport a mustache in World History.

Battle Academy 2 – $ 7.99

It’s exactly like the first Battle Academy, but it has a 2 on it, so it means it’s focused on the Eastern Front. Still amazing, very much a solid wargame and a solid recommendation from me. One of the first wargames I have ever played. Oh, and Battle Academy 2 has a battle generator for infinite replayability.

Scourge of War – Remastered – $ 9.49

Are you into Napoleonic Warfare? Do you like that time period and would like to know what it was like to command hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen? Well, there’s no game as detailed and as great in scale and spectacle as Scourge of War. It’s very complex, but if you’re really looking to dive into it, go ahead, you won’t regret it. And for $9.49, it’s an absolute steal.

Pike and Shot: Campaigns – $ 9.59

This game is built on the same engine as Battle Academy, and it’s very similar to it as well, but it’s set during one of the most interesting and underrepresented eras of combat: the time of the Tercio, where muskets and pikes fought side by side all over Europe.

Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris – $ 9.59

A more traditional wargame set during the early stages of World War 2. Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris is another simpler, great entryway title I would highly recommend to those of you interested in this time frame. Have in mind the game is exclusively focused on this specific time period, so don’t expect any Barbarossa or late war stuff.

Cold Waters – $ 9.99

Submarine simulation games tend to be… let’s say, somewhat convoluted, with all the calculations one has to make and with the whole “having to properly operate a very finicky piece of machinery in a very stressful environment”. That’s not the case with Cold Waters, as it puts you in charge of one of several Cold War-era submarines. The game simplifies a lot of things, but keeps the most interesting aspects of stealth, navigation, and combat engrossed and in-depth.

Ultimate General: Gettysburg – $ 9.99

I don’t think I would ever advise anyone, no matter who they are, to not play Ultimate General: Gettysburg. Created by Darth Mod, the guy behind the titular mod for Total War, it’s one of the best strategy games ever created, zooming into one of the most pivotal battles of the 19th century. Has amazing AI and plenty of “what-if” scenarios.

WARPLAN – $ 9.99

A grand-strategy wargame that’s very elegantly designed, can be played either as the Axis or the Allies, and zooms into the European aspect of World War 2. Warplan’s focus is on unit production, research, and most of all, combat.

  1. Sir Nuno, I love this site. I visit it often and read almost everything. I’ve been playing strategy games since the ZX Spectrum.

One correction here: in both Cauldrons of War games, you don’t play “as the two cheekiest men to ever sport a mustache in World History,” um, um.

You’re the commander of everything, but you’re neither Stalin nor Adolf.

    1. Hello! Thank you for the kind words! How would you describe it?
