Turn-Based Strategy Games
Warplan series $9.99
Fun Hex and Counter War game. Like Strategic Command with some unit stacking.
Battle Academy $1.49
Best beginner war game ever made. Got me to understand John Tiller games.
Strategic Command: World War I $15.99
My favorite in the series, but pick what you’re interested in. Panzer Corps-type of simplistic combat with economies and research. Just needs unit stacking.
Strategic Mind Series Blitzkrieg $15.99
My favorite Panzer General Clone. Worst voice acting, but good storytelling in a wargame. Graphics can be janky, but they look great for a hex and counter war game. The supply system is done well.
Hex of Steel $11.99
The ultimate bargain of a war game. Complete sandbox with the best mod support on Steam Workshop I’ve seen in a traditional war game. No looking stuff up on an outdated link on a Matrix forums. And the developer is cool. Like punk rock in an era of pop.
Shadow Empire $15.99
Most unique sci-fi war game setting ever made since Alpha Centauri.
Panzer Corps Gold $7.49
I prefer this over 2 since you can’t beat the price and amount of content. I’m too cheap for the second game. I own it, but I’m not paying for all that DLC.
Warhammer 40000 battle sector $11.99
Amazing Warhammer Experience. Decent storytelling and good graphics. Enemy AI is solid.
Headquarters HQ $23.99
I love the graphics and updates. The atmosphere is even better with a German mod that’s on the Steam forum. A true successor to Battle Academy.
Wargame Construction Set III: Age of Rifles 1846-1905 $2.99
Best Franco-Prussian War game out there. You can also be Chinese Gordon.
Wargame Construction Set II: Tanks! $2.99
Golden classic with tons of scenarios you can download for free. The game is hard as nails. The first of the great war games, in my opinion. If you can figure out the UI on 80s war games, you might enjoy some other gems. The 90s are my limit.
Afghanistan ’11 $5.99
A Decent COIN game. Realistically, fighting a fleeing Taliban.
Wars Across The World $4.49
A buffet of any conflict. Unlike other Avalon games, this has a good tutorial. Come on, do a good tutorial, guys.
SGS Korean War $14.49
Huge massive campaign. Only Korean War game this deep.
Pike and Shot Campaigns $9.59
My second favorite game I can play the Franco Prussian war with a mod until WDS decides they want to make money. Besides that, it’s a tabletop player’s dream of the Pike and Shot era. A buffet of scenarios
Gary Grigsby’s War in the East $23.99
I know 2 is better, but I love the price on this one, and I still only played this one. The historical accuracy and detail are every Eastern Front fan boy’s dream.
Unity of Command 2 $4.49
A good Panzer General Clone with a unique supply system.
Burden of Command $19.99
John Tiller meets storytelling. I like it, but I wish tutorials were easier to go through.
Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun $5.99
Like Pike and Shot with Samurai’s
Order of Battle: World War II $5.99 DLC
For a Panzer General Clone, this one has an amazing amount of content. I really like their upgrade and supply system.
Attack at Dawn: North Africa $11.99
A very good WEGO game, I wish I had spent more time on. For that price, it’s a bargain. I know it doesn’t belong on turn-based, but I had to stick it somewhere.
Classified: France ’44 $13.99
Best XCOM WW2 type of game out there.
Mare Nostrvm $5.99
Roman naval ware. Turn-based. Enough said
Field of Glory II $5.99
Play any game in the series. I’m recommending this cause of the price.
ENDLESS Legend $7.49
Best Civilization Clone that makes Civilization irrelevant. Great tactical battles.
Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm $9.99
Another WEGO game that should be with Attack of Dawn. There are new games in the series, but I never found a reason to move on from this game, and it’s cheap.
Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers $2.49
Most realistic squad game ever developed. Graphics still hold up, but be careful, it’s hard. Coming back from Iraq when this game came out made me almost tear up cause of its quality.
Galactic Civilizations II $4.99
This game is so good. After playing 3, I went back to this one. Master of what? This is my go-to space civilization game. I know there are 4, but I’m sticking to vintage.
Khaligrad $3.49
Don’t sleep on this game. It’s basically a squad tactical game where you have to manage scarce resources like you’re in Stalingrad, I meant Khaligrad.
The Operational Art of War IV $17.99
One of the best sandbox games ever made. If you’re cheap like me and only need one war game. This is it. Has almost every conflict ever made or imagined. I am a big fan of 3d in war games, but I do not play this in 3d. One of the ugliest games ever made, but on 2d with mods, it looks decent.
