Chris’s Recommendations For The Steam Autumn Sale 2025

Hey, it’s Chris! Today, I’d like to help you figure out what type of war game you like to buy during this Steam Autumn Sale. I’m aware there are newer games in these game series, but I am only putting out games that I personally put time into and are cheap.

To let you know, my list probably caters to the 40-and-above audience. I’m a man from the 20th Century rather than the 21st century. My favorite Bands are CCR, Pink Floyd, Waylon Jennings, and Frank Sinatra. I like my music on Vinyl, and I like my games without crazy microtransactions and gacha mechanics, so you won’t see me putting many games catered to free-to-play players or twitch sensational fanboys.

Nuno and I differ on what we like best. We are both from different countries and time periods. So feel free to enjoy our takes on our game recommendations and opinions.

Real-Time Strategy Games

Men of War. .74 cents

It’s a great classic, and I still haven’t moved to the second game.

Total War: Shogun 2 $7.49

I think since I’ve been studying Japanese history, I’ve been partial to this game. All the games in the series I can recommend.

Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa $16.49

The storytelling is excellent, and its mod support can give it a visual upgrade.

Medieval Kingdom Wars $4.94

I think this game really sets the bar when it comes to gameplay, it comes to Medieval RTS, cause of its 4x type mechanics and historically accurate naval battles. I haven’t had a reason to move to other games.

Combat Mission Shock Force 2 $29.99

Since I am an OIF veteran, I like that I can make units that wore my unit’s uniforms during the war. I don’t think any other video game can accurately depict modern warfare. Besides needing Helicopters.

Scourge of War Remastered $9.49

The most accurate gun and powder war sim out there.

Ultimate General: Civil War $14.99

I’m a huge American Civil War buff. The game could use a better campaign system, but the AI gives Total War a run for its money.

Graviteam Tactics: Mius-Front $19.49

Like Combat Mission with a campaign and smoother mechanics. You can play rare conflicts in the DLC.

Stronghold: Definitive Edition $4.99

A great old school classic. I would put Crusader in, but I have not played it yet.

Armored Brigade 2 $35.99

Since I’m a cheap guy, I would usually recommend the first game, but since one made the original so obsolete, I can only recommend this one. It’s like Combat Mission with better AI and helicopters.

Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865) $22.99

I know haters are going to hate the jank, but no other war game combines all its elements. A Jack of all trades type of game. For me, it’s tons of fun.

Iron Harvest $4.49

If you want a taste of how Dawn of War 4 may possibly be. I love the lore and setting.

9th Company Roots of Terror  $1.99

Not many games cover the Afghan Soviet War. This is solid.

Steel Division: Normandy 44 $4.99

I know I should recommend 2, but I’m still playing this one.

Wargame: European Escalation $2.49

I should be recommending Warno, but I still haven’t found a reason to move past this game. Solid and cheap.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition $12.24

Gold Standard RTS. Masterpiece with constant updates. Play 4 if you want nicer graphics.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada $1.49

Perfect space/naval wargame to me. I haven’t transitioned to the superior 2 yet.

Command & Conquer™ Remastered Collection $4.99

The RTS that started it all for me. Never played Dune 2 at the time.

Radio Commander $3.99

I love storytelling and unique mechanics. This game draws you in, commanding troops from the radio with imperfect information.

Nordic Warriors $13.99

Myth series clone you never heard of

Close Combat: Cross of Iron $7.99

My favorite of the series. Short battles, dynamic campaigns. Realistic troops.

Company of Heroes $3.99

Probably my favorite RTS ever. I never played the 2nd one cause of it.

The Great War: Western Front $6.99

Best WW1 game ever made. WW1 haters will hate the grinding battles and non-definitive outcomes. For me, as a WW1 buff, it makes it very realistic. I’m not a fan of Petroglyph games for the last 10 years, but they hit a home run on this one.

Mount and Blade: Warband $4.99

Couldn’t decide if I should put this game in this section. But it’s a bit like Total War meets an RPG, so I’m leaving it. It’s such a masterpiece, I have no desire to look at 2.

Seven Kingdoms 2 HD $3.99

Best economic depiction in an RTS

Offworld Trading Company Core Edition $7.49

Actually, this is the best economic depiction in an RTS. No combat pure economics.

Tempest Rising $25.99

Great soundtrack, units, and graphics, but lacks the Waifus of the C&C series.

Starship Troopers: Terran Command $16.49

Best recent new RTS IP currently this decade.
