Top 10 Wargames To Play In 2026

5 – Wargame Design Studios – Campaign 1814

I wanted to give you another suggestion to go with Scourge of War: Remastered, as there aren’t a lot of true wargames that model the intricacies of Napoleonic-era warfare. Fortunately, Wargame Design Studio has some of the best games available that’ll complement nicely every library of soon-to-be Aides-de-Camp. I chose Campaign 1814 because it has content to keep you playing for months on end, with 369 scenarios, 10 campaigns, and a master map of 370.000 hexes, covering all the major actions of the 1814 campaign until the abdication of Napoleon, it’s going to be hard to compete with this. The reason I put it in a better spot compared to Scourge of War is because of its wider scale and because it’s a lot easier to start playing and manage the massive battlefield. It also offers a lot more variety. To be fair, a lot of other games could be picked as well, it’s just a matter of what you like, and what you’re looking for at the moment. I also love their World War 2 titles, at all levels, from strategic to tactical.

4 – Command: Modern Operations

If you’re looking for the most realistic wargame around, you have to play Command: Modern Operations. With a database of over 10.000 units, meticulously recreated from the end of the Second World War until today, there’s no other game in the market that even comes close to this one in whatever aspect one might want to consider. Well, other than graphics, of course. But on everything else that really matters, Command: Modern Operations is the ultimate wargame for those wanting to simulate naval and air combat.

3 – Ultimate General: Civil War

I don’t think there’s a better modern Civil War title other than Ultimate General: Civil War. It brings the complexity and depth of games like Sid Meier’s: Gettysburg and Scourge of War but wraps it up in a modern, well-designed, easy-to-pick-up-and-play package that’s also visually appealing. I also think that’s the best game you can play if you’re interested in gaming the American Civil War but don’t have a starting point. Ultimate General: Civil War has an on-rails campaign that’ll have you playing all the major battles of the conflict, while at the same time allowing you to build up and customize your armies. You can also play each battle with historically accurate forces if that’s more your jam. It’s also going on sale for cheapies more often than not.

2 – The Troop

These Best Wargames Lists usually see Battle Academy as a permanent feature. No longer, as in 2026, we have a game that I think it’s one of the best entry-level wargames that you can boot up and learn to play in half an hour: The Troop is a turn-based tactics wargame set in the Second World War that’s jam-packed with amazing content, from having tons of units to dozens, a story-driven campaign and tons of maps to skirmish and play on the dynamic campaigns, it’s jam-packed and feature complete. The game also plays incredibly well, with in-depth mechanics for both infantry and armour. One of the best things The Troop has is its extremely competent AI, which acts extremely realistic most of the time and will put up a fight in every encounter. A U.S. Forces DLC was released adding 7 new scenarios and 30 new units.
