Strategy Games Where Your Armies and Units Are Absolutely Insane

4 – Total War: Warhammer 2

While the Total War franchise became famous for its semi-realistic take on historical time periods, its foray into the Warhammer (and Total War: Warhammer 2 especially) universe allowed the developers to unleash complete mechanical anarchy, which, in my opinion, and I know some traditional players disagree with me, was all for the best, and it’s even bleeding into their future historical titles. Depending on the faction you choose, your army might consist of literal bipedal dinosaur gladiators riding even larger dinosaurs (the Lizardmen), or a teeming horde of mad-scientist mutant rats (the Skaven) who field literal rolling hamster wheels of death, and radioactive green miniguns. Watching a line of disciplined high elves get violently slammed into by a massive, rampaging undead pirate ship colossus carrying a cannon for an arm is not a highlight; it’s just an average Tuesday for the Warhammer Fantasy Universe.

3 – Command & Conquer: Generals

Closely following the tradition of previous Command & Conquer titles of making units which are as outlandish as possible, it’s funny that Command & Conquer Generals– at first glance – masquerades itself as a gritty, modern geo-political conflict game. When you boot it up and start playing and take a closer look at its factions, it reveals a roster built entirely on unhinged chaos, particularly the Global Liberation Army (GLA). The GLA is a parody of Middle Eastern militias in the craziest way possible, with the most memorable unit being a simple Molotov-chucking “Angry Mob” that becomes a bit too overpowered when given Aks. There are also Toxin Tractors, which spray sludges to instantly melt infantry and suicide bombers, because if you’re going all out, you might as well really go ALL OUT.

2 – Impossible Creatures

Impossible Creatures was a classic, brilliant RTS where you don’t build standard factory structures to pump out artillery pieces and supply trucks. Instead, you use a genetic lab to splice two real-world animals together to build your custom combat units. You win matches by designing the most biologically offensive monstrosities imaginable and sending them to tear down the enemy base. If your frontline strategy requires a pack of flying cheetah crocodiles, or fire-breathing whale-ants that shoot defensive swarms, this game allows you to bring that terrifying genetic nightmare to life.
