1 – War In The East 2
Released in 2021, Gary Grigsby’s War In The East 2 is the ultimate monster wargame to dominate all historical wargames, and one of the best World War 2 games of all time. To say otherwise would be a complete understatement. This is the sort of hex-and-counter wargame that I think if you’re able to properly play this, enjoy, and replay over and over again, you should be awarded an honoris causa diploma in History. It’s the most realistic and authentic depiction of the largest battlefield of the Second World War: The Eastern Front. It features thousands of units, each with its own stats and details, and a map that’s nailed down to a tee, a massive full-length campaign that will take you months to finish, and a lot of improvements aimed at streamlining the air combat of the game to have turns go a bit smoother. It’s a massive undertaking to even pick up and start to learn War In The East 2, but when you do, every other wargame will look tiny in comparison.
Conclusion
The last decade has been one of the best for wargames. Newcomers like The Troop and Sea Power brought a whole new level of accessibility, detail, and even graphical fidelity we weren’t accustomed to seeing in wargames, setting the way and upping the standards for everybody else. At the same time, titles like War In The East 2, Ultimate General: Civil War, and Unity of Command 2 improved upon their predecessors in every aspect and delivered some of the best strategy experiences of all time, and not just at the level of wargames, at every other sub-genre of strategy gaming. Here’s hoping for another decade as dynamic, game-rich, and innovative as this one! I’ll see you again in 2036!
