The Best Strategy Games Of The Last Decade

1 – Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Now, it’s finally time to unveil my favorite strategy game of the last decade, and that one is Marvel’s Midnight Suns, released in 2022, and developed by Firaxis and a team led by Jake Solomon, who worked on XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2. The game was initially poorly received and failed to meet sales expectations, but it has been seeing a kind of resurgence as of late, with people starting to give it a go after picking it up at bargain bin prices and realizing that Midnight Suns was truly something special and unique.

A turn-based strategy game set in the Marvel Universe where the player controls the titular cast of heroes and their custom-made “Hunter” against a world-ending threat. In between missions, the game takes you back to The Abbey, where you’re free to explore, uncover secrets, engage in side-quests, discover your past, and interact with the colorful cast of well-known characters like Captain America, Spider-Man, and Iron Man. In my review of it, I called it “perfect”, and I’m so happy to see people going back to give it a go. Just so you have an idea of how much I enjoyed the game, I don’t think I have ever 100% a game before, and I went out of my way to get every piece of gear, hidden secret, and story bit the game had to offer, and I don’t regret it one bit.

Such an amazing experience, and one I wish I could delete from my mind just to play the whole thing all over again.

Conclusion

The last decade has seen strategy games rise from a niche corner of gaming to becoming world-renowned success stories, reaching top-sales charts, and influencing the gaming industry as a whole. In 2026, it’s undeniable that strategy games are in a far better place than they were in 2016, and it clearly shows in the huge amount of offers on display, the quality of said games, and the sheer scale of the playerbase that no longer exclusively the top-hitters, but actually enjoys smaller indies and more obscure experiences. Here’s to ten more years of greatness! I’ll see you all again for the 10-year recap of 2036!

  1. Wow. Midnight suns as top ONE!? Gotta admit, I loved that game. IIRC I discovered it last year per this site’s recommendation, and I had a blast with it, playing on the steam deck.
But it still comes as a shock to see it so high.

These are my personal favorites that I would place on the list:
    – age of wonders: planetfall
    – against the storm
    – company of heroes 3
    – hearts of iron 4
Not just because I loved them the first time around, but I keep returning to them.
