1 – Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition

There is a reason Age of Empires 2 is still one of the most played strategy games on Steam. It has the perfect design, it features a massive amount of content, including dozens of civilizations and campaigns that span the globe, and it’s constantly being updated with new DLCs that change things up in major ways, adding new civilizations in multiplayer and bringing out new campaigns for those of us who much prefer to play solo. The Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is one of the gold standards for remasters: 4K graphics, a fully remastered soundtrack, the inclusion of three DLCs from the base game, quality-of-life features like automatic farm reseeding, new civilizations, and frequent updates and DLC make Age of Empires 2, arguably, the best strategy game ever made.
Conclusion
Game remasters always cause some division amongst the playerbase, with some of those loathing them as lazy cash-grabs, while the other half loves the idea of going back to play their old-time favorites with modern commodities such as 4K support, updated controls, and a better UI. I fall into the latter category, and I still think that the remasters and remakes of games are the best and easiest way to experience these classics. Strategy games are already complex as is, and I don’t think we need extra hurdles to enjoy them.
In the end, the most important thing is to pick a setting that interests you and dive in. All of the games in this list are excellent in their own right, and if you want to find out about more suggestions, check out my lists and my in-depth reviews!
