Introduction
Whether you are a seasoned veteran of the hexagonal grids from the late 80s and early 90s, or a complete newcomer looking to see what the fuss is about in the real-time strategy genre, finding the right entry point into the strategy genre is a daunting task, especially if you’re looking at older titles that you might have missed when you were younger.
Fortunately, we are living in a golden age of remasters and definitive editions. Developers have finally realized that the classics are classics for a reason, and they are bringing them back with modern conveniences that make them more accessible than ever. Most of these games I have played during my time as a kid or a teenager growing up, so it’s incredible to see them being ported over to modern systems and treated with the care and respect they deserve. All of these games are worth your time, and if you want to pick a couple, there’s no way to go wrong. Join me, and let’s discover the 12 best strategy game remasters to play in 2026.
12 – Warcraft III: Reforged

Warcraft III remains a beloved real-time strategy and is often hailed as the king of “Hero RTS”. By introducing powerful hero units that level up and gain spells like an RPG character, the game gives you a focal point for your tactical decisions and puts you in command of a powerful unit for you to care for, micromanage, and invest time and effort, something no other game really did at the time. Hey! It’s no wonder Warcraft 3 was also the title that started the whole MOBA craze, first with DotA, then with League of Legends. Warcraft III: Reforged brings updated models and a cleaner interface to one of the best stories ever told in the genre. Maybe just another small note, Warcraft III also inspired a very small MMO you might have heard about called World of Warcraft.
11 – Halo Wars: Definitive Edition
Halo Wars: Definitive Edition was built from the ground up to be the most accessible RTS ever made. Originally designed for consoles, its Definitive Edition on PC retains that elegant simplicity that was fundamental in taking the game from PC to consoles. You won’t find yourself wrestling with dozens of hotkeys here. The base building is restricted to specific slots, and the resource system is automated through supply pads. It is the ideal “training wheels” game for anyone who wants the thrill of large-scale combat without the clerical work. The Definitive Edition was updated to run natively on PC, improving stability, has new achievements, includes all the DLC created for the original game, and has improved graphics.
10 – Age of Mythology: Retold

Age of Mythology: Retold is a masterclass in how to modernize a beloved spin-off, and I absolutely loved the way this was done. It is literally remastered perfection to the highest degree! Everything remains the same: AoM takes the solid foundation of Age of Empires and injects it with god powers and legendary monsters. The campaigns are the same, the units too. But the Retold version massively improves the visuals and sounds, adds new campaigns and challenges, and even adds the Atlanteans as a playable faction, something the original game didn’t have.
9 – Praetorians – HD Remaster

Boy, do I still remember how hard I struggled to understand this one when my father first gifted it on my birthday. It was unlike any other real-time strategy game I had played before. If you prefer to focus on the “tactical” part of real-time strategy, Praetorians – HD Remaster is your best bet if you love the Roman setting. It strips away the base building and resource management to focus on combat, as the game tasks players with moving squads across Roman-era battlefields, using terrain and formations to outsmart the enemy. It is a pure, focused experience that teaches the importance of positioning without the distraction of wood-cutting or gold-mining. The HD Remaster reworked visuals, the user interface, and updated the controls.
