The Best RTS Remasters and Remakes To Play In 2026

4 – Homeworld Remastered Collection PC

Homeworld Remastered Collection PC

Moving strategy into a three-dimensional space is no easy feat, but Homeworld managed it back in 1999, and it still holds up with Homeworld Remastered Collection, one of the first remasters to appear in the scene, having released all the way back in 2015. Better yet, it’s still one of the most comprehensive and complete remasters ever made. Joining Homeworld and Homeworld 2 into a single package, the Remastered Collection updated the game with high-resolution textures and models, support for HD, UHD, and 4K resolutions, new audio mixing, mod support, and multiplayer. You can also choose to play with the original graphics if you so desire, and the game allows you to change from contemporary to vintage graphics as you wish.

3 – Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition

One of the most recent remasters on this list is Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition. Fortunately, it’s also one of the best and one of my favorite strategy games of all time. Players have to manage their peasants’ happiness, keep the granary full, and design walls that can withstand a siege, while building armies that can overtake their enemies’ fortifications. Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition did an amazing job by dragging this classic into today’s day and age, by remaking the graphics, the soundtrack, adding new lords, new missions, a new campaign, and new challenges. It’s another perfect remake. If you never played Stronghold Crusader, you have to!

2 – Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition

It’s hard to put into words how much the Definitive Edition of the original Dawn of War had me longing for the early 2000s golden era of real-time strategy games. I absolutely adore this remaster, and it’s one of the best things that has ever happened since I started Strategy and Wargaming. took the RTS formula and turned the aggression up to eleven. The Definitive Edition made it a lot easier to run the game in modern systems without having to scour forums or download sketchy files just to have it start and run decently on a 16:9 resolution. Improved the world lighting, unit reflections, and shadows, and the game can now run in 4K while looking decent due to texture upscaling. The original pathfinding was massively improved, and the game includes an integrated mod manager that’s compatible with the mods of the original game. Oh, I should also add that the game packs all the DLCs, giving players dozens of hours of single-player campaigns and an unlimited supply of multiplayer opportunities.
