My Recommendations On The Best Strategy Games To Buy During the Steam Medieval Fest 2026

Total War: Attila

Total War: Attila is here because it’s home for the best mod in the history of the Total War franchise called 1212 AD, which turns the game into Total War: Medieval 3, but somehow I’m predicting it’s even better than what Medieval 3 is going to be. Download Attila and install the mod. You won’t regret it, because for less than 10 dollars, you’re going to get the best medieval grand-strategy/real-time battle experience of all time.

Battle Brothers

Yes, Battle Brothers is not realistic at all, but there aren’t a lot of strategy games out there that let you take control of a mercenary company. A brutal, unforgiving turn-based strategy game where every move, every swing, and every loss is permanent, just like the brain damage your soldiers take during combat. It’s set in a low-fantasy setting, so there are several magical creatures to fight. It might not be realistic, but if you’re looking for a challenge, this is your best pick.

Crusader Kings 3

The absolute king of Medieval politics, and no other game even comes close to this one. If you prefer to scheme, marry, and do court politics instead of constantly fighting on the battlefield, then Crusader Kings 3 is the right choice. It’s one of the best grand-strategy games ever put to code, and it’s one of the most successful strategy series of all time. You can’t go wrong with it.

Ancestors Legacy

Ancestors: Legacy never really got the reception it deserved, but for just 5 dollars, it might be the perfect time to pick this one up and give it a go. It’s a squad-based real-time strategy game in the vein of Company of Heroes, but transported back to the medieval era. Stealth, unit formation, and terrain all play a role in deciding the outcome of a battle. It’s also set during the Early Middle Ages to High Middle Ages, while most games usually tackle the High to Late Middle Ages, where armor and equipment were more advanced and sexy.
