My Recommendations On The Best Strategy Games To Buy During the Steam Medieval Fest 2026

The Dark Ages of the Steam Medieval Fest 2026 Arrived And Come With Some Great Sales

The clatter of plate armor and the whistle of longbow arrows are returning to fill your ever-growing backlog of digital titles. Starting today, April 20, at 10:00 AM PDT, the Steam Medieval Fest 2026 officially kicks off, offering a week-long celebration of feudal conquest and tactical brilliance until April 27. This list goes over some of the best strategy games I have personally played and am willing to recommend. This list also marks the first time a Wargame Design Studio title goes on sale! Hooray for those who love hex-and-counters and traditional wargames as well!

Since I have reviewed most of the games, I’ll also link my reviews if you want to know more about whether the game is the right fit for you.

Age Of Empires 4

I think that Age of Empires 4 is the second-best Age of Empires game of all time after Age of Empires 2. It modernized the series, changed things around by adding variety to each civilization, but kept the basic formula the same. Amazing single-player campaigns. I only wish they had more DLC for it. A bit expensive at 20 dollars, but if you’ve grown tired of the other games in the series, I think it’s worth it for the single-player aspect.

Crusades: Book I & Crusades: Book II

The first of the Wargame Design Studio titles to come into a Steam Sale. A world premiere, indeed. Crusades: Book I & Crusades: Book II are two traditional hex-and-counter wargames that attempt to simulate how combat might have unfolded in the most realistic way possible. In my review of Book I, I considered it to be one of the best Medieval games ever made, and Chris’ review of Book II confirmed that the second entry is as good as the first.

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is the best real-time strategy game of all time, and it’s set in the medieval era. Imagine our luck!

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition

The second-best real-time strategy game of all time, also set in the medieval era, but has a greater focus on castle-building and sieges. All jokes aside, Stronghold Crusader is an awesome classic, and the Definitive Edition elevated it to a whole new level with new and improved graphics, soundtrack, new AI Lords, and missions.
