1 – Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy

No matter how many new wargames come out, I always find myself going back to play Combat Mission. Even though this one is quite old, and outdated by today’s standarts, the matter of the fact is, if you’re looking for a wargame series that takes place in World War 2, at the tactical-level, and simulates war as faithful as possible, and still has enough games to cover almost every major front of the war, there’s no other place to go aside from Combat Mission.
Every small minute detail, from an individual soldier’s morale to the number of rounds it carries, to the ballistics and physics of those rounds, everything is intricately simulated to provide you with the most accurate experience possible. The field of view is brutal, and you can only see what your troops can spot, and even spotting isn’t instantaneous. Communication between units in the field is vital, and the use of combined tactics is instrumental to achieving victory.
Even with its shortcomings, Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy is still my favorite wargame of all time, and I often jump between CM: Fortress Italy, when I want to fight in the Italy campaign, and CM: Black Sea and CM: Shock Force 2 if I want a more modern experience. No doubt that the fact that there’s a whole ecosystem of titles that mostly play the same way, while offering very distinct experiences, is another major plus for this series as a whole. I’m super excited to see how Combat Mission 3 is going to do, and it’s by far my most anticipated wargame for the next couple of years.
