Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition Gets A New Naval Update

Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition Screenshot of the Hulk, War Hulk and Carrack units

Just recently, I published a list of the real-time strategy games I think are a must-play in 2026, and Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is still sitting in the number 2 spot. Have in mind that, despite being a rework of the original game, the formula is nearly 30 years old! And yet, a new naval gameplay update is adding a new hulk-line featuring two new ships: the Hulk (that upgrades to the War Hulk and then the Carrack), as well as the Catapult Galleon. The Hulk was specifically designed to counter the Fire Ship, but they’re vulnerable to the missile attacks of longer ranged ships like Galleys. New technologies were added to the docks, and others have been updated too, and the Fishing Ships can now gather gold from Whales in the open seas, a substantial change in the game’s economy.

Kriegsspiel Has A Demo For You To Try

For those of you who are looking for a more serious title, this week I bring you Kriegsspiel ~ 7 Years’ War, a real-time wargame where the player takes the role of commanding the entire army and has to rely on couriers to send orders and receive reports. The developer reached out to me after reading my article about Famous Historical Myths Perpetuated by Strategy Games, and how his game tackles the number 1 myth, which is the notion that you always know where your enemy is. In Kriegsspiel, that isn’t the case, because the player only sees what’s inside his field of vision, and there’s no god’s eye-view of the situation. There’s a demo available, so make sure to check that one out.

Strategos Roman Civil Wars Narrative Campaign

This is just a small blurb to let you know, Strategos fans, that a new Roman Civil Wars and Revolts narrative campaign has been added to the game.

Insider Trading Out Now

Jump into social media for a couple of minutes, and it seems that everyone and their mother is an investor nowadays. Well, if you’re more into gaming and less into professional gambling, then a game like Insider Trading might be more of your shtick. This is a roguelike deckbuilder about manipulating the stock market, where each card makes the market move, each hand played moves prices, and greed will accelerate gains and risks, and you have to decide when to cash out and secure the money you’ve made. While I haven’t played it yet, I was given a review key, and I’ll give it a go soon. If I enjoy it, I might pen a review on it.

Opus Magnum Gets A New DLC 10 Years Later

It seems like Age of Empires 2 isn’t the only old game to get new content. Opus Magnum, a beautifully crafted puzzle from Zachtronics about doing alchemical reactions, is getting a new DLC called De Re Metallica, 9 years after the game came out. The expansion adds a new story set around a researcher called Saverio Daas, in search of new metallurgical secrets. If you haven’t played Opus Magnum, it’s one of the best puzzle/strategy games ever made, where you take the role of an alchemist and have to find the most efficient ways to set off alchemical reactions by designing machines to assemble the final product you’re trying to create, from basic materials and gemstones, to elaborate potions and weapons.
