5 – Crusader Kings 3
Crusader Kings 3, my favourite Paradox title, is an engaging grand strategy game set in the medieval world where players control a dynasty and rule over vast lands. Offering a deep and immersive experience, the game weaves a complex web of relationships, politics, and power struggles, allowing players to navigate the intricacies of dynastic rule. With its rich storytelling and intricate gameplay, Crusader Kings 3 stands out as one of the most captivating and dynamic strategy games available.
4 – Age of Mythology: Retold
I absolutely love Age of Mythology: Retold, and I was initially concerned about how it would turn out. However, it exceeded all expectations, becoming the definitive version of this classic game. If you’re a fan of Ensemble Studios’ Age of Empires series and haven’t played Age of Mythology yet, Retold is the perfect entry point, offering a unique twist with mythical creatures and heroes. With an impressive amount of content, great graphics, and three engaging single-player campaigns, Age of Mythology: Retold stands as one of the best RTS games available in 2024. Even if you have just a passing interest in real-time strategy, missing out on this title would be a disservice.
3 – Gates of Hell – Ostfront
Gates of Hell: Ostfront is a modern masterpiece in the real-time strategy genre and is often considered the spiritual successor to the beloved Men of War series. In my opinion, it stands as the best Men of War-like game ever created, surpassing all other titles in the franchise. Offering one of the most comprehensive World War II experiences, Gates of Hell features a vast array of units, vehicles, and historically accurate battles that immerse players in intense, tactical combat. It’s a must-play for any fan of historical RTS games. Since the game’s dirt cheap in this sale, you can get it with some of the DLC, and every single one of it is amazing, and expands the game with new factions, campaigns and units.
2 – XCOM: Enemy Unknown
A permanent staple on any of my lists, the 2012 XCOM: Enemy Unknown reboot of the 1990’s original is a thrilling turn-based tactics game that puts players in command of a squad of elite soldiers defending Earth from a deadly alien invasion. Featuring a challenging campaign with some of the best turn-based battles around, XCOM provides hours of intense gameplay that will keep you hooked until the end of its 40-hour-long adventure. Even over a decade since its release, the game’s graphics remain impressive, and its tactical combat is as engaging as ever. I replayed it just last year, once more, and I’m already excited to jump back again sometime during the summer. Is there anything else in gaming like the impact of permanently losing a key team member? If you’re a fan of turn-based strategy games, this reboot of the classic 90s XCOM is an absolute must-play.
1 – Manor Lords
Even Manor Lords is making a show at this year Steam Easter Sale! One of the best medieval strategy games and city builders ever put to code. I wrote in my review that “Manor Lords- is for the strategy genre– while Baldur’s Gate 3 is for role-playing games. What Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was for shooters, what Company of Heroes was for real-time strategy. It’s a game that sets new and high standards for the genre that everyone will be comparing future titles to”, and almost a year after it’s release, I still think that is true. The game went on to sell over 3 million copies, and became the best selling strategy game of 2024! And some say Strategy is dead.
