Unlike traditional submarine games that focus on direct control of the U-boat, UBOAT takes a unique survivalist approach, where players step into the role of the commander, managing the ship’s crew to ensure the vessel’s success. This involves overseeing various aspects of the crew’s well-being, from ordering tasks across the U-boat’s systems to ensuring they are well-fed, motivated, and rested. With its focus on the “life of German sailors,” UBOAT offers a deep and realistic simulation of life aboard a German U-boat during World War II.
9 – Tactical Breach Wizards
A charming and witty turn-based strategy game that cleverly blends puzzle mechanics is how I would describe Tactical Breach Wizards. The hilarious character dialogues, impressive visuals, and low price make it an easy recommendation for fans of strategy games that most enjoy a brain twister, instead of pure tactical freedom. It won several Strategy Game of the Year awards from other outlets. It still ranked as one of my best strategy games of 2024.
8 – Ultimate General: Civil War
To me, Ultimate General: Civil War stands as the best modern game for experiencing the American Civil War you can play today. It’s a game that has nearly everything you’ll need if you’re looking to get your feet into this impactful and iconic conflict. It’s a game that manages to offer a perfect blend of depth, complexity, and accessibility in ways no other can. Combining the tactical richness of classics like Sid Meier’s Gettysburg and Scourge of War, this game presents its content in a visually appealing, easy-to-learn package, where moving units is as simple as dragging arrows. Whether you’re new to Civil War gaming or a seasoned enthusiast, Ultimate General: Civil War you owe to yourself to give this one a go. I cannot understate how great this game actually is.
7 – Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew
I actually got around to appreciating Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, a game that failed to impress me when it came out. Now I have grown to enjoy it, and that’s because there was no other team like Mimimi Games when it comes to crafting stealth strategy games. The team single-handedly revived a genre that had been dormant since the Commandos series faded away in the early 2000s. While many hailed it as the pinnacle of stealth tactics, with its expansive maps, supernatural characters, and funny and witty writing, I still think their more serious and grounded Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is still an incredible option if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative.
6 – Combat Mission: Battle For Normandy
My favourite wargame of all time, at least for now, Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy is a perfect representation of what World War 2 was like in the tactical game, and it captures it with a level of detail no other game manages to. With a variety of scenarios, campaigns, and a powerful scenario editor, Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy is a must-play for wargame and World War 2 enthusiasts.
