4 – Game of Thrones: War for Westeros

The only thing I wonder when I look at Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is: Why? Why after all this time? The HBO series based on GRR Martin’s book series has ended more than half a decade ago, so why wait for so long to do this? That might boggle the mind, but I then come to my senses and realize that having a game that looks like it plays similarly to The Battle for Middle-Earth with a Game of Thrones theme on top is the next best thing one could hope for aside from a Total War: War for Westeros, or a Crusader Kings 3 spinoff. The recent influx of gameplay has me hopeful that War for Westeros might deliver on its premise. Yes, it’s playing it safe, but I would rather have the team do that, instead of taking on a massive undertaking of trying to revolutionize the genre. Something that will miss the mark 99 times out of 100. If the game is a semi-decent traditional RTS and makes itself company with a passable grand strategic layer, then I’ll be happy.
3 – Metropolis 1998

I was but a wee lad in 1998, and yet I still have found memories of lined-up streets of yellow lamps, the hopeful expectations for the new millennium, and the overall calmer and more disconnected way of life. This might be, of course, completely outside of the realm of reality, given that I was a kid. Despite that, and having played the demo for Metropolis 1998, I came out of it with the feeling that the game captures that nostalgia in a way that’s hard to put into words. This is going to be one of the most unique city-builders ever made, given the fact that it will allow you to create everything on the map, and I mean literally everything, even the smallest kitchen appliance or piece of furniture in one of the tens of thousands of rooms that comprise your city. The graphics, too, are just… Chef’s kiss!
2 – Space Scum

The second most recent entry on my Steam wishlist is Space Scum (after War Company: Fortress Europe). Battle Brothers is a direct inspiration for Space Scum, and one can certainly see that from a mile away. In my book, that’s a massive win. In case you’re unaware, let me fill you in: Battle Brothers is a tough-as-nails turn-based strategy game where players have to command a mercenary cadre through an unrelenting and uncaring world, and most of the time your guys will end up starving, maimed, or just outright dead. Space Scum is following those exact footsteps, but in space, which is yet another major win. I’m tired of winning with these new strategy games!
During the last Steam Fest I gave the Space Scum demo a go and had a blast playing its tutorials and first couple of missions. The game is as brutal as the one that inspired it, gory, and has the exact same feel to its combat. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for Space Scum in the coming future.
