7 – Gilded Destiny

Here’s another 4X game right after Espiocracy, and yet another Hooded Horse title. Victoria 3 just didn’t click with me, and I don’t even know why. Given that I’m not the biggest fan of the time period of the Industrial Revolution and the early 20th century, I still like the idea of playing it. For some reason, Vic 3 just felt boring to me, and I dropped it rather quickly. Maybe I need to give it a go, but only after I play Gilded Destiny, a new take on the exact same premise as Victoria 3.
The reason I want to play it so bad is that I want to see more developers taking a gander at what’s Paradox’s home field. And the game also looks like it has a bigger focus on warfare, which was a massive part of international relations during the late 19th century, especially for colonial powers.
6 – Dust Front RTS

You might be surprised to find Dust Front RTS so high up on the list, but remember, this one is putting games one against the other and taking into account my personal opinion. While I have played Dust Front in the last Steam Fest and have a blast with it, I came out of it happy, but also with the realization that this is going to be just a very traditional RTS, which was not exactly what I was on the lookout for. The game was relatively fast-paced as well, so I’m still holding out to see how well it’s going to play out in bigger battles, or if it’s going to become a bit too much for me to manage. Not that I’m old or anything; it’s just that I don’t really want to bother having to micro an entire battlefield.
As for its premise of fighting on a desolate planet where war has been waged for generations, it’s fantastic, and the whole grand campaign being tied to the RTS battles is also something that has its fangs sink into my expectations of the game, so judging it without seeing it as a whole is not easy. I remain hopeful.
5 – War Company: Fortress Europe

If you’ve been around Strategy and Wargaming for any length of time, then War Company: Fortress Europe’s appearance should not surprise you in the slightest. A grand-strategy World War 2 wargame that plays out in real-time, across the entire Western Front? Yes please. I am a World War 2 buff through and through, and I feel like I have a need to at least experience every World War 2 game ever made, so putting War Company here was as much an act of instinct as of personal desire. If the game delivers on its scale and complexity, we might actually be looking at one of the best World War 2 games in recent memory. One can only hope.
