The Best and Most Exciting Strategy Games To Keep Your Eyes On During Gamescom 2026

Total War: Warhammer 40,000

The constant stream of gameplay coming out of Total War: Warhammer 40,000 has me hopeful that the game’s release is closer to us than we might be anticipating. The Alpha Strike Livestream showed the early moments of the campaign and a full battle, and I have to say, this game looks gorgeous when seen from up close. During the middle of the introductory battle, a couple of drop pods smash right into the Ork lines and more Space Marines come out and start pummeling them. At the tail end of the stream, they also showcase another major battle, now with a lot more units and equipment as well. Quite spectacularly.

My favorite part was the time the team spent on the Chapter Creation. Apparently, the showcased build is just a very limited version of the final thing, because during playtesting for Gamescom, they found out that people were spending at least 45 minutes just playing around with the customization options before starting up the game, and they only did so after being told to. The only thing I don’t like is that we won’t be able to name our chapters the way we want to, but I understand that they might be avoiding an Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 2 lobby situation; still, I want to name them as I wish, so that kind of sucks.

Humankind is a much better game at this point than Civ and I’m super hyped for the sequel.

I swear most Civ fans won’t be happy unless they rerelease Civ 5 again (which they bitched about at launch). They’re so scared of any changes. I really appreciate Amplitude actually trying to push the genre in any direction instead of making the same game over and over since Civ 4.

  2. There will surely be mods that let you set your TWWH40K faction name to whatever you want
