4 – Danube Front ’85
All the games we have gone over were historical, so let’s dive into a chillingly plausible scenario of global conflict with Danube Front ’85. This compelling entry in the Modern Campaigns series thrusts want-to-be commanders into a hypothetical 1985 “Cold War Gone Hot” where the Soviet Union invades Western Europe, with the battlefield being set between the River Rhine in the West, Denmark in the North, and Austria in the South. The fighting forces are, unsurprisingly, the NATO and Warsaw Pact.
3 – Midway
We have seen our fair share of Relive the pivotal moment that turned the tide in the Pacific Theater with Midway from Wargame Design Studio. This renowned WW2 naval wargame places you in command of both American and Japanese carrier Task Forces during Pearl Harbor, the Solomon Islands, Midway, and a couple of others. Unlike other titles in the Wargame Design Studio catalogue, as fleet commander your role is very much a different one than that of an “on the field” commander, and you’ll be acting up more as an Admiral, coordinating air strikes, conducting crucial reconnaissance, and formulating strategies on the go. Oh, and I probably should have mentioned that the game is a real-time strategy (RTS), and not a turn-based affair.
2 – France ’14
At the number two spot in this list, we have the title that covers the mobile opening stages of the Great War, with France ’14. This game tasks players with attempting to execute the Schlieffen Plan as the Germans, or to halt their advance as the Entente Forces as historically accurate, during the battle of the Marne. The game includes 33 scenarios, 6 campaigns, and 3 grand campaigns, covering a master map of 150.000 hexes, stretching from the North of France to Luxembourg. Like all other titles, France ’14 offers an unparalleled level of historical detail, from unit formations and command structures to terrain effects across its enormous map.
