7 – Campaign Waterloo
When it comes to Musket battles, only one other battle can rival Gettysburg in terms of its historical relevancy and impact: Waterloo. With Campaign Waterloo you can step onto the legendary battlefields of 1815 and recreate, or rewrite history. The game meticulously recreates Napoleon’s final campaign, encompassing not just the climactic Battle of Waterloo, but also the preceding engagements at Ligny, Quatre Bras, and Wavre. Like all other Wargame Design Studio games, battles can be played from either side, and players can command the French Imperial forces, Wellington’s Anglo-Allies, or Blücher’s Prussians, navigating the complex strategic decisions and fierce tactical combat that defined this pivotal moment in European history. With 159 scenarios, plus 6 campaigns with 145 scenarios, totalling almost 300, there’s plenty to entertain yourself with this 220.000 hex map. 6 – Eagles Strike
Now we have an option for players who prefer detailed, company-level tactical engagements over grand operational movements or theatre-wide strategy, with Eagles Strike being a personal standout. This entry in the acclaimed Squad Battles series meticulously recreates the American Airborne experience on the Western Front from the D-Day landings until the battle of the Ardennes and beyond. You’ll be commanding squads of infantry, individual tanks, and support weapons, making tactical decisions about positioning, fire support, and maneuvering across diverse and historically accurate battlefields, from the hedgerows of France to the thick forest of the Ardennes. Similar to all other titles in the Warmga Design Studio catalogue, Eagles Strike
Eagles Strike boasts an impressive number of scenarios (120) and Orders of Battle for the American Army, the American Airborne, the Luftwaffe, and the SS. It’s another one of my personal favourite wargames ever, but that might be because I just read too much into D-Day and what happened in the weeks and months after.
5 – Thirty Years War
We don’t have enough games covering the complex conflict that was the Thirty Years War, with the notable exception, of course, of Wargame Design Studio. This historical wargame from their beloved Musket & Pike series meticulously simulates the tactical challenges of the 17th century’s brutal European struggle in the field of battle. The 80 scenarios present cover the battles of Lutzen, Wimpfen, Fleurus, and a whole host of other notable conflicts. While certainly not my area of expertise, the period where pikes and muskets coexisted has always fascinated me as a transitional period in warfare.
