The Most Replayable Strategy Games To Play Over and Over Again

Introduction

In a World where everything is becoming ever more expensive, getting the most fun and content for your buck becomes a very important decision factor. This is especially important in video games, a medium where prices can range from just a couple of bucks to well over 100 dollars. With this in mind, I have decided to compile an article of the most replayable strategy games you can play over and over again, having fun while you’re doing it, and even discovering new content and new experiences after dozens, maybe even hundreds of hours.

I’ll focus exclusively on what makes these games replayable, so if you want to know more about each individual game in-depth, I’ll link to my other lists, reviews, and previews so you can check them out at your own pace and leisure. The 12 games showcased here are just a sample of the amazing selection of hundreds of fantastic strategy games that could be featured. So, please remember that the readership of Strategy and Wargaming also wants to know what other suggestions you have, so drop them in the comments down below, and I’ll write up a new piece with your suggestions!

12 – 9 Kings

Hooded Horse has been on quite a roll in these last couple of years, releasing banger after banger, and some of those are spectacular experiences in their own right. With a 92% Very Positive rating on Steam, with nearly 20,000 reviews, 9 Kings was one of the best strategy games of 2025, and one of the most replayable, by a long shot. Its roguelike nature, and its fast-paced gameplay, paired with the base idea that you’re supposed to be building a small kingdom in a limited number of terrain slots, and have to constantly strive to optimize your combos, creates a perfect loop that incentivizes trying out different builds and army combinations. There are also 9 different Kings (hence the name), each with their unique deck and playstyle. You can combo your king’s cards with your enemies, too, so you can imagine the insane amount of combinations this can lead to. The game was also intentionally designed to allow good players to intentionally break it. Read my full review if you want to know more!

11 – ISLANDERS: New Shores

I know that a lot of strategy games involve some level of stress, since it’s all about high-stakes decisions most of the time. Well, what if you’re looking for a title to relax with? Maybe just want to have a couple of rounds under your belt after a long day at work and have a swell time without needing to sweat bullets at every moment? I know that my choice is ISLANDERS: New Shores.

I have been a fan of this two-game series since the first came out, all the way in 2019, and it has been my destressing tool ever since. It’s the perfect game to play while you’re listening to your favorite podcast, a random YouTube video, or music. The game gives you a couple of buildings, tasks you with placing them, and depending on the location, it will give you a certain number of points, and add or subtract more points depending on its surrounding buildings. Beat the score, and you move on to the next stage and start anew. It’s a very satisfying loop to start over and over again, trying to edge out that high score just so you can start all over. I cannot tell you just how much I enjoy ISLANDERS, and how often I fall back to it. It’s one of those games permanently installed on my machine.

10 – Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era

For this article, I wanted to add a recently released game from 2026, and while scouring what came out this year, an obvious choice emerged: Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era. This title marks the return of the series to the beloved formula of Heroes 3, a move that fans have been asking for so long and never got, and nearly 3 decades have gone by since. Fortunately, Olden Era is a really good Heroes game, and comes packed with content (even for Early Access) with 6 very distinct factions, 18 different heroes for each, dozens of spells to uncover, dozens of maps, the first part of the campaign, and a map randomizer so that no two games are ever the same. It can also be played using the traditional mode that allows players to control several heroes at once, or my favorite single-hero mode, where you can only control one. It’s one of my favorite games of 2026 so far, and while I could imagine some making a case that Heroes of Might & Magic III is still better, and it’s finished, we’re in 2026, and things have changed a lot since then. Still a classic, though, but it’s time to move on.

9 – Hearts of Iron IV

Hearts of Iron IV

To be fair, I could have put several games instead of Hearts of Iron IV, some of them with a lot more depth and complexity, and with an equal amount of replayability if you’re willing to really dive into its mechanics and learn the ins and outs of it. Games like War In The East 2, Warplan, and even Strategic Command WWII wouldn’t look out of place in here. However, these games are overly focused on the nature of warfare and lack the breadth of scope that Hearts of Iron IV does for everything else, including politics, diplomacy, espionage, and equipment production. This is World War 2, at its true scale.

Better yet, it puts all of this into a comprehensive package that’s easy to pick up and play, even for players who are unfamiliar with the genre of grand-strategy and wargaming. Besides all of those mechanics, what makes Hearts of Iron IV so replayable is the fact that you play the whole pre-war, war, and post-war years with any nation on Earth available at the time, decide your own goals, and set up your own challenges. Maybe you want to do a peaceful playthrough? Maybe you want to be an absolute menace and start the war as early as possible. Maybe conquer the whole world using a minor nation? The game will accommodate that. Keep in mind that the game is a DLC mine, and some of the most interesting country choices will require some extra purchases.

  1. For me no list of replayable strategy games would be complete without Strategic Command World at War, Old World, Diplomacy is Not an Option, Sins of a Solar Empire II, … whew, so many great games, it’s hard to stop.

    1. I agree with you on all counts, this list could go on Forever!
