The Most Replayable Strategy Games To Play Over and Over Again

1 – Civilization VI

The Civilization series of games made a name for itself for being the prodigy child for players who wanted freedom and replayability in a 4X format. It puts you at the helm of a human civilization, from its early days in history, and allows you to take them all the way to the near future, with all the trials, tribulations, and triumphs that entail. Start with a single city, and expand into a mighty empire, turn-by-turn by means of exploration, diplomacy, and conquest. IT’s the constant feeling of just doing one more turn that keeps players coming back for more, paired up with the endless possibilities a new random map and challenge might bring, that keeps me playing it to this day, nearly 10 years after it released.

It’s hard to believe a decade has passed since Civilization VI came out. The introduction of district mechanics transformed the most boring and linear aspect of previous Civs, which was the city-building, into a strategic mini-game in its own right, with plenty of choices and small optimizations, and choices where previously there were almost none. The DLCs of Gathering Storm and Rise and Fall bring cataclysms and emergencies, as well as golden ages, policies, and a whole host of new units, leaders, and smaller mechanics.

While each Civilization game is a worthwhile experience in its own right, if you’re looking for the best and most complete one to play in 2026, I would have to advise you on choosing Civilization VI, as it takes all the improvements made by Civilization V and adds a ton on top. The game also goes on sale quite often, and the anthology bundle will give you the whole experience without breaking the bank, with the lowest recording price being at $11.50, with a 95% discount. That’s true bang for your buck right there.

Conclusion

If you so happen to find yourself out of games to play, this problem should be solved by now, and either you love a classical 4X experience like Civilization VI, a grand-strategy epic of Hearts of Iron IV, or just want to place some buildings and see big numbers go up in ISLANDERS: New Shores, I’m sure there’s a game in here for you. I personally fall back on ISLANDERS, Civilization VI, and FTL: Faster Than Light, more than I care to admit, but that just goes to show how replayable these titles truly are. Do let me know your opinion on the comments below. I love reading them, and do my best to answer all of them too!

  1. For me no list of replayable strategy games would be complete without Strategic Command World at War, Old World, Diplomacy is Not an Option, Sins of a Solar Empire II, … whew, so many great games, it’s hard to stop.

    1. I agree with you on all counts, this list could go on Forever!

  2. I notice that you keep mentioning something to the effect that Hearts of Iron IV is easy to pick-up and play. Why do you say that? For the uninitiated, I’m not sure any of Paradox’s grand-strategy games are easy to “pick-up and play”

    1. Well, in my opinion, it’s the easiest game to pick up because it’s the most focused. The trees of the countries basically guide how you’ll be playing, the production aspect of things is rather simple, and the tutorial does a great job at explaining how everything comes together. Is it the easiest of games? No. But it is the easiest of the Paradox’s titles

what a joke , there is no total war franchise in this list , try play total war warhammer 3 or total war three kingdom dude or the old one total war medieval 2 its good best strategy game

    1. Total War: Warhammer 3 is in a lot of my lists! Also, Three Kingdoms as well. Total War: Medieval 2 has been recommended dozens of times too!

  4. I can add Age of Wonders 3, Panzer Corps 1, Anno 1404, Steel Division 2, Cities Skylines 1, Warhammer 40K Gladius, Against the Storm.
    I love strategy games 🙂

    1. Amazong suggestion, thank you so much!

  5. For me it’s TWW3 and AOW2. The variety of factions I can build and try is what makes me put thousands of hours into those banest.

    1. I can agree with those 2!

  6. You forgot to mention StS 2’s multiplayer, which opens up a whole new world of replayability, as party combinations and multiplayer-only cards change a lot of things up.

    1. Great suggestion!
