15 – Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era

Fans of classic turn-based strategy games are eagerly awaiting Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, an official prequel returning to the series’ beloved roots. Slated for an Early Access launch in Q2 2025, this PC title promises to bring back a rich fantasy experience set on the unexplored continent of Jadame. Players will dive into a non-linear campaign, recruit heroes, manage economies, and lead vast armies of mythical creatures across the now iconic hex-grid battlefield. With a focus on the core principles that made the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise so beloved for players like exploration, empire-building, and turn-based tactical combat, the Olden Era is shaping up to be a much-needed return to form for the franchise. Featuring six distinct factions, including fan favorites like Necropolis and Dungeon, alongside the new, menacing Hive faction. A robust map editor and various multiplayer modes, including Classic, One-Hero, and Arena, are going to ensure that those who missed the Heroes of Might and Magic will have every incentive to come back and play this new entry. The hand-drawn graphics look fantastic and do a great job of bringing the fantastical nature of the series to life.

14 – Mars Tactics

Developed by Takibi Games and published by Hooded Horse, this lovely-looking turn-based tactical game promises a gritty and in-depth strategic experience. Mars Tactics is set to launch on PC sometime in 2025. This deep strategy game thrusts players into a brutal conflict on the titular Red Planet, pitting the corporate armies of Capital against the worker revolutionaries of Labor. Beyond the intense squad-level combat similar to that of XCOM and Xenonauts, Mars Tactics features a robust strategic layer where players have to manage resources, logistics, and research across a detailed Martian map. What sets it apart from other games in the genre are its fully destructible environments, allowing for creative tactical maneuvers like blasting new cover or collapsing buildings on entrenched foes. With dynamic soldier progression, where units gain unique traits based on their actions, and asymmetric factions offering distinct playstyles, Mars Tactics promises a fresh take on tactical turn-based warfare for strategy enthusiasts seeking a challenging and immersive sci-fi conflict.

13 – Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2

I really need to do a best Warhammer 40,000 games list don’t I? Especially now that the revered Adeptus Mechanicus is set to return in Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II, and to deploy its tactical and technological brilliance on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025. This highly anticipated turn-based strategy sequel expands upon the critically acclaimed 2018 original, immersing players deeper into the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40,000, not by putting them in charge of even more Space Marines, but of the iconic (and silly) Mechanicus. For the first time, Mechanicus II offers two distinct narrative campaigns, allowing players to command both the cybernetically augmented Tech-Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the ancient, relentless legions of the Necrons. I’m personally more excited to play the latter because I want to see how the game models the immortal nature of its units. Expect enhanced tactical combat with new environmental mechanics, dynamic planetary control over contested territories, and a vastly expanded roster of units and leaders for each faction. With acclaimed author Ben Counter weaving the narrative, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II promises to be a must-play for fans of turn-based tactics and the sprawling Warhammer lore.

12 – MENACE

Having loved Battle Brothers, I’m sure that MENACE is going to live up to the studio’s reputation of creating a brutal, in-depth, innovative tactical turn-based strategy game. Currently slated for a 2025 release on PC, this ambitious title thrusts players into a perilous future, commanding a strike force of diverse units answering distress calls across different worlds through a campaign of escalating difficulty. As humanity’s first interstellar expedition, players will face hostile alien forces, and engage in a series of challenging missions, making critical decisions that impact the future of those under your command. Similarly to the games that inspired it (XCOM and Battle Brothers), players can expect robust customization options for their troopers, mechs, and vehicles, and a character-driven experience that promises to deliver a truly engaging sci-fi strategy adventure and a lot of emergent storytelling moments, as every squad leader in MENACE has a history and a personality, expectations and aspirations, and sometimes that can also mean trouble.

11 – Every Day We Fight

I have never heard about Every Day We Fight until a couple of weeks ago, when I played its demo and found myself hungering for more. The game has a fantastic blend of turn-based tactics, challenging roguelite elements, and real-time stealth that just work perfectly in its setting! Players are cast as the last hope against a relentless alien invasion that froze humanity in place while they extract the planet’s resources. Players lead a small squad of 3 badass characters, and they’ll uncover their past as they play through the game. Every Day We Fight gets a lot of its systems from games like XCOM, but it has an emphasis on stealth and on the player being the one taking the shots in first-person, which radically shakes up the formula and removes a lot of the RNG elements, changing it instead into a more skill-based title. The fact that the aliens (and you) can move when you’re taking these first-person shooter shots also adds a lot to the tension and planning of your moves, because enemies are no longer stuck in place during your turn. With its replayable nature, deep tactical combat, and a focus on emergent storytelling through gameplay, this title aims to deliver a fresh and challenging experience for fans of squad-based strategy and roguelikes. Every Day We Fight is promising to be a game where every victory is hard-won and every defeat offers new insights. I loved its demo and I cannot wait to go back, play it all the way through and review it. The game’s coming to PC and consoles in July 2025
