Top 5 First-Person Shooters (FPS) Games To Get On The Steam Wargames Fest

2 – Squad

Squad is- probably- the most-played tactical first-person shooter in 2025. If you’re looking to experience large-scale, combined arms in a modern setting, there’s no better alternative. Inspired by Project Reality, from Battlefield 2, Squad is known for featuring sprawling maps and up to 100 players per server, Squad emphasizes communication, squad-level tactics, and the importance of logistics. Players can take on a wide range of roles, from infantry rifleman to vehicle crewman and pilot, all working together to achieve objectives, under the command of their officers. Build fortifications, coordinate fire support, and utilize a variety of ground and air vehicles to dominate the battlefield. Squad offers a deeply immersive and strategic experience for players who value teamwork and realistic military simulation. I still love Squad for what it offers, but the next game on this list is, without a doubt, my favourite.

1 – Hell Let Loose

It should be known that World War 2 is the conflict I spend most of my time playing around in, from real-time strategy (RTS), traditional wargames, and even first-person shooters. For the latter, my favourite choice to experience the brutal realism of World War II is Hell Let Loose. This tactical first-person shooter is very similar to Squad, in the sense that it also emphasizes teamwork and communication to pull off some of the complicated combined arms strategies necessary to win across vast, historically accurate battlefields. Players take on roles within infantry, reconnaissance, or armour units, each with unique weapons and responsibilities. If you love the burden of commanding your troops, you can also act as a squad officer, or as a battlefield commander, where you’ll have to coordinate with your squad and a larger team to secure objectives, manage resources, build fortifications, and outmanoeuvre the enemy in intense 50 vs 50 multiplayer engagements. The game’s constantly being updated, and it has a vibrant, very engaged community of people who are truly passionate about World War 2.

While the game started out with only featuring the Western Front iconic battles like Omaha Beach and Carentan, the Eastern Front and North African campaigns are also available as well, alongside the Russian and British armies.

If you want to jump on and play with me, you’ll find me on European servers almost every weekend, acting mostly as a machine gunner or as an automatic rifleman.

  1. that’s BS first person shooters shouldn’t be in the war game Fest they’re not war games

    1. Hello, Rob! I’ll let you guys discuss that! But my opinion on the whole “what is a wargame” debacle is that nobody can agree on what a wargame is. I wrote this article, which you might have fun reading -> https://strategyandwargaming.com/2024/10/14/wargaming-and-wargames-gamings-most-controversial-genre/

  2. before it was abandoned rising storm 2 vietnam was amazing. I think vietnam is such an overlooked area for fps/war games
