Top 5 First-Person Shooters (FPS) Games To Get On The Steam Wargames Fest

The Best First Person Shooters On Sale At The Steam Sales Fest

Did you think my Steam Wargames Fest recommendations were over with the release of my top demos to try out? Well, surprise, because we still need to go over the best first-person shooters! It looks like Steam’s definition of what a wargame is, is very similar to mine, in the sense that it considers a wargame a game that simulates warfare, realistic or imagined, as a whole, rather than as a sub-genre of strategy. I’m glad this Steam Wargames Fest is a thing because it brings a lot more visibility to the genre, and it does a lot to ease people from other, more traditionally well-established genres like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and simulation, into more realistic and historical “traditional” wargames. But enough of that, you’re here because you want to know what are the best 5 first-person shooters you can buy and take advantage of the sales going on at the Steam Wargames Fest. So join me, and let’s look together at some of the best shooters, from World War 1 to the present day!

5 – Isonzo

While we don’t get enough World War 1 first-person shooters, the ones we do have are pretty great! I believe that Isonzo is probably the best World War 1 you can play in 2025 alongside Battlefield 1 (which is the best World War 1 game of all time, in my humble opinion). Focusing on the Italian Front, Isonzo brings the vertical and mountainous battles of this theatre to life with stunning attention to detail and it does some fantastic fan service to people who love obscure uniform and weapons references. Players will fight across dynamic maps, utilizing historically accurate weaponry, perfectly recreated for the game. And, if you’re lucky enough to be on a good team, even the tactics used will be similar to something you could see in the real-life battles of the Italian Alps. In all fairness, the game’s verticality almost forces you to fight like the soldiers of yore did way back when. From intense mountain assaults to desperate defences in fortified positions, Isonzo offers a unique and challenging WWI first-person combat experience that emphasizes strategic use of the environment and teamwork. The game’s currently costing less than 10 dollars, at 75% off.

4 – Arma Reforger

In my years at Strategy and Wargaming, I have recommended Arma 3 dozens of times, so I think we should move on to Arma Reforger. Serving as a standalone stepping stone to the highly anticipated Arma 4, Reforger offers a more focused experience within a smaller, yet richly detailed, Cold War-era setting. This, of course, didn’t stop the community from modding every piece of military hardware under the sun into the game. Arma Reforger is a great step in the right direction, focusing on improving the player experience with the Arma series, by improving the way infantry movement works, the physics of the vehicles, and just overall improvements on performance. The game’s also a massive visual upgrade in comparison to Arma 3. If you’re looking for an accessible entry point towards the world of the hardcore military simulation genre, Arma Reforger is probably the best game for you. The game is currently 20% off its usual price of 40 dollars.

3 – Six Days in Fallujah

Oh man, Six Days in Fallujah did ruff some feathers when it was announced, 4 years ago, with poor journalistic outlets crying about how insensitive it was to do a game like this. Fortunately, nobody else cared and the team moved on to release one of the best first-person shooter experiences you can play in 2025, and one which tackles one of the most famous battles of the 21st century: The Battle of Fallujah. Developed in collaboration with U.S. Marines who fought in the battle, the game aims to deliver an authentic and respectful account of the events, and amongst its team several people fought there, to give their testimonials on how things went down. The game utilizes “procedural architecture” to dynamically alter the environment, aiming to replicate the unpredictable nature of urban warfare. Six Days in Fallujah seeks to provide a unique and unflinching perspective on a significant modern military engagement.

  1. that’s BS first person shooters shouldn’t be in the war game Fest they’re not war games

    1. Hello, Rob! I’ll let you guys discuss that! But my opinion on the whole “what is a wargame” debacle is that nobody can agree on what a wargame is. I wrote this article, which you might have fun reading -> https://strategyandwargaming.com/2024/10/14/wargaming-and-wargames-gamings-most-controversial-genre/

  2. before it was abandoned rising storm 2 vietnam was amazing. I think vietnam is such an overlooked area for fps/war games
