Paradox Next Game Brings Grand Strategy to Fallout and Mad Max Fans

Paradox Interactive, a publisher most well known for the excellent grand strategy historical titles like Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis, is now taking a shot at a post-apocalyptic setting. Afterworld is still a grand-strategy affair that mixes vibes from Mad Max and Fallout, and will have players leading a tribe of survivors in a devastated world, rediscovering ancient technology, waging war, and managing settlements in the wasteland. According to their first Dev Diary, David Lind, the director of the game, mentions that the first drafts for Afterworld date back to 2012. According to him, this setting offers a “perfect mix of the procedural sides of Stellaris and the historical sides of other games – it’s a world you know and are familiar with, but changed, twisted, and with interesting lore to discover and learn about. I have also wanted to work on something a bit darker and grittier that explores humans in extreme situations – which is a perfect fit for the apocalypse”.

HUMANKIND 2 Announced

Gamescom 2026 also saw the announcement of a new game from AMPLITUDE Studios with HUMANKIND 2. While the first HUMANKIND title didn’t exactly garner much of a fanbase, mainly because of its culture-changing central mechanic, the studio is now hoping that by refining the surrounding mechanics, things will go smoothly and that HUMANKIND 2 might be a proper contender for the 4X throne. However, the focus on culture-changing still remains, as described by the game’s own Steam Page: “Each Era brings the opportunity to adopt a culture that expands and deepens the identity of your civilization, unlocking exclusive customs through rich cultural progression trees”. The game is set to arrive in 2027.
