The 10 Best Strategy Games To Buy At The GOG Isometric Games Sale

In Strategy and Wargaming, we cover a lot of sales, but mostly Steam. However, one of my favorite stores is currently running an amazing sale that I think is well worth a look! GoG (Good Old Games) is running their Isometric Games Sale, and at the time of publishing, you still have 8 days to pick up some of the best games! The isometric perspective is one of my favorites, and some of the games on sale are absolute classics!

This is a very quick recommendations list of quality vs price to help you figure out which games you should be on the lookout for, so if you’re looking for more in-depth coverage, I have other more detailed lists and a lot of reviews going over some of the games in here! Here are the 10 best games to buy at the GOG Isometric Games Sale.

10 – Age of Wonders: Planetfall

Triumph Studios took their signature Age of Wonders 4X fantasy formula and launched it into a rich sci-fi universe with Planetfall, creating a match made in strategy heaven. The game blends high-level empire management, sector expansion, and diplomacy with full-fledged, XCOM-style tactical turn-based combat complete with cover mechanics and overwatch.

9 – The Lamplighters League

The Lamplighters League was supposed to be Harebrained Schemes’ (better known for the amazing BATTLETECH) and Paradox Interactive’s way of getting a piece of that XCOM pie, but fell quite flat during its release due to a lot of technical problems, something that was completely avoidable, and ended up rubbing a ton of players the wrong way. A globetrotting adventure in an alternate 1930s setting where you fight a cult called The Banished Court (the game’s version of fans of the infamous Austrian painter). Each team member is unique in their skills and story, and they’re all super fun to uncover. The game was in a pretty rough technical state when it came out.

8 – XCOM 2

One of the best turn-based strategy games ever made, and the successor to the 2012 reboot of the classic 90s alien-busting series. XCOM 2 brought a ton of new stealth mechanics, new classes, and a masterpiece expansion called War of the Chosen, adding a ton of new content, but above all else, the most fearsome enemies the series has ever seen.

    Lol. Okay, Sir Nuno, I like what you do, but this list is ridiculous — or rather, the title is. Half the games mentioned aren’t strategy games at all, and only Planetfall truly meets the “classical” definition of a true strategy title; the rest are some of version of a turn-based tactics game.

    Do yourself a favor, and simply delete “Strategy” from the article name, and change it to “The 10 Best Games To Buy At The GOG Isometric Games Sale”. The list will still be a decent list, with the benefit of actually being labeled honestly & accurately.

      I get your point, but for the average gamer, there’s not a whole lot of diffence between what we consider to be a turn-based strategy and what we consider to be turn-based tactics. If anything, they have more in common than not. People often praise Wasteland’s combat, and the RPG elements of Rogue Trader, but in the end, they have 99% of their DNA in common. I have long since stopped discussing gaming genres, because there will never be a definitive answer, especially when strategy is an underlying aspect of all games.
