The Best Turn-Based Strategy Games For Beginners Who Want To Play XCOM & XCOM 2 – A Complete Guide

XCOM – The Final Boss

Finally! We have come to face the final boss, XCOM: Enemy Unknown! But before I let you go, there are still a couple of things you can do before tackling this fantastic title. If I were you, and I just finished my journey of all other games in this guide, I would start tackling XCOM by getting all the tutorials done and over with, because skipping them also means you’ll not learn the unique basics of the title, and you’ll also be missing the very first fun couple of hours where everything starts to come together in your mind. Don’t rush the tutorial; read everything. You’ll get it done and over with in about an hour, and you won’t ever need to do it again. To keep frustration at bay, don’t run an Ironman mode from the get-go, and lower the difficulty if you feel like it. Remember, games are supposed to be fun, not to bang your head against a wall. After you’re done with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, I would play XCOM 2, and then XCOM 2 with War of the Chosen. After that, as a desert, I would play XCOM: Chimera Squad, which is pretty damn fantastic, so just ignore the naysayers. There you have it! Your very own guide to play XCOM!

Conclusion – Looking Forward To Other Challenges

This guide will serve you well on your journey to play one of the best turn-based strategy games ever made, and the game that’s single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of strategy we have been seeing for the last decade and a half. With this guide, you should also be fully capable of going after more complex games like Xenonauts 2 and Jagged Alliance 3, and I have an article just about that, where you can find out more about the best turn-based strategy games to play if you loved XCOM and XCOM 2.

I do what I do in Strategy and Wargaming because I love to do this, and I’m never going to stop. If you would like to support me with that, you can buy me a coffee for a dollar if you’re feeling generous. If you can’t, no worries, Strategy and Wargaming will always be free, and I’d love to have you around!

  1. Is xcom really that deep bro? Just tell him to put a few hours in and he will have it.

I live for xcom. I may love it more than my wife. Sorry honey.

  3. Once you play XCOM, must play is also XCOM Enemy within rebalance from 2026…there are some mechanics like red fog, better overwatch and scamper. After this you can jump to XCOM2 nevikstoryteller 2026, this is beautiful full experience of XCOM. These are mods from people who love XCOM.

  4. At some point, do yourself a favour and go back and try the original 1994 x-com (openxcom rebuild).
If you can get past the outdated graphics and janky controls it’s an awesome game.
Instead of 3-4 supersoldiers where you want to savescum if 1 dies, you start with 14 rookies per mission and fully expect half of them to die. There’s a kind of Darwinian evolution means that those that survive will eventually evolve into decent soldiers.

  5. Listing all games like XCOM and did not even mentioning Xenonauts 2?! I am disappointed.
