17 – Showgunners

I bought Showgunners recently, after a reader of the website recommended it to me, and was pleasantly surprised at what was on display, and how true to the XCOM-like formula it is, while also adding its unique spin due to the setting it decided to embrace: You’re on a death show, have to navigate deadly, and trap-ridden environments and encounters.

16 – Cyber Knights: Flashpoint

If you’re looking for a game that will keep you entertained for- quite literally- weeks and months on end, then Cyber Knights: Flashpoint is the title for you. A turn-based strategy game where you command a team of cyber-enhanced operatives pulling all sorts of heists. The highlight is the number of skills, enhancements, weapons, and options available with which to tackle every challenge. So much so, it can become quite overwhelming to learn, but once you do, this is possibly the most elaborate turn-based strategy around today.

15 – Gears Tactics

Ah! The perfect 7 out of 10 video game! Gears Tactics is one of my favorite franchises of all time, and I just love everything about its over-the-top, monster-splitting action and industrialized aesthetic. Every part of it tickles my monkey brain in the most perfect of ways, even to the point where I can stomach playing the worst games in the series (yes, I’m looking at you, Gears of War 4 and 5). Gears Tactics is no different. While it was criticized by people (me included) when it released, I still think it does some very interesting things that are worth a playthrough, especially if you buy it at a discount. The upgrading of three action points instead of 2 opens the game up for some crazy combos, the melee kills add on top of that as well, and the story is worth experiencing if you’re into the lore.

14 – Door Kickers 2

After three turn-based strategy games, let’s look at Door Kickers 2, a real-time tactics game that takes the planning phases of older Rainbow Six games (remember those?) and transforms them into a full game. As commander of a select group of soldiers, it’s the player’s job to meticulously plan the mission: from choosing a loadout for your soldiers, where each individual unit must go and when, to what corners they’ll be peaking, and even when they should be reloading their weapons. If you prefer to play it as a more action-oriented strategy game, the game can be played in real-time with pause, allowing you to adapt to every situation. While the first DK focused a lot more on SWAT operations (and it’s still worth getting and playing), DK2 goes the military route, where the main goal is counter-terrorist operations abroad.

13 – Block’hood

Block’hood is a minimalist neighborhood-building simulator that challenges players to design and manage a vertical, ecologically sustainable community out of 200 modular blocks. The whole point of the game is to try and strike a balance between expansion, attracting enough humans and animals, and preventing the whole neighborhood from deteriorating. It’s a different kind of challenge we’re not used to seeing, but one that only video games can deliver upon.

12 – Game Dev Tycoon

Game Dev Tycoon is just a lovely title, and one of the best indie strategy games to play in 2026, one that I’ll never stop recommending. Despite being relatively old by now, it’s still one of the best and stress-free strategy management experiences you can play if you ever dreamt of having your own gaming company. Players take on the role of a founder of a gaming company and start developing games for the first computers and consoles, all the way through modern times, keeping up with the technological advances, market trends, and new hardware that’s constantly coming out. While it might sound complex, it really isn’t. Creating games is as simple as making a multiple-choice questionnaire and moving sliders up and down for prioritization. It’s super satisfying when your niche cozy survival horror racing game does incredibly well with the critics and the public.

11 – Valkyria Chronicles

Valkyria Chronicles is exactly what you get when you mix World War 2 with anime and then build a strategy game around it. It’s a fantastic (and sometimes tear-jerking) tale of fighting against overwhelming odds, friendship, and sacrifice. The turn-based strategy battles with aiming control are where the game truly shines, with the balance between victory and defeat hanging in the tread of how you move, protect, and position your units. A lot of the time, you’ll find yourself facing a superior, well-equipped enemy, which will lead to plenty of memorable moments. The game gets tougher as it goes on, and the later missions are quite challenging.
