1 – Age of Mythology: Retold
The closest thing we have to match the magic of the original Age of Empires 2 is the game that succeeded it, just a few years later. Age of Mythology is, in essence, a 3D Age of Empires 2, in a new mythological setting. The game managed to keep all of the RTS basics intact, even with its 3D transition, and still improved in most aspects.
The highlights of Age of Mythology are the introduction of new god powers, a roster of memorable, powerful mythological creatures, and a 32-mission-long cross-mythological romp campaign that will see you take Arkantos from an Atlantian admiral to becoming a full Demigod. Age of Mythology: Retold came out in 2024 with new and improved graphics, packaged all the original campaigns and expansions together, and it’s still in active development, with a recent Aztec expansion having been released in April 2026.
If you loved Age of Empires 2 and never jumped into Age of Mythology because of its mythological theme, let me assure you that, as someone who loves History, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into here as well that’ll please you.
