The 15 Best Wargames To Buy During The Steam Winter Sale 2025

Introduction

The Steam Winter Sale 2025 is now in full swing, bringing massive discounts on some of the best wargames on Steam, but finding the real standouts can be overwhelming. That’s why I’ve put together this curated list, highlighting 10 must-buy wargames worth your attention during the sale. The selection covers a wide range of styles, from classic turn-based strategy games and real-time tactical wargames to deep military simulations that reward careful planning and realism. Whether you’re a beginner wargamer looking for accessible entry points or a seasoned strategist hunting for great value, this list is designed to help you get the most bang for your buck during the Steam Winter Sale.

The Steam Winter Sale runs until January 5th.

10 – Wargame: Red Dragon

To those of you scoffing at the idea that Wargame: Red Dragon might even feature in this list, I only have one question for you: if Wargame: Red Dragon isn’t a wargame, then why does it say in the title? Check-mate! In all honesty, while Wargame: Red Dragon might not be a traditional wargame, it certainly does a great job of recreating the frenetic action, complexity, and weapon systems of the Cold War. While WARNO, the younger brother of the series, is a very convincing prospect, if you don’t know if you enjoy this kind of game, start by spending 6 dollars on Red Dragon: it’s cheaper, has a lot of singleplayer content, and hundreds of units spread around dozens of nations.

9 – The Troop

The Troop is one of the best wargames you can play in 2025, and one of the best tactical wargames ever made. Set during the Allied invasion of Normandy, during World War 2, players take the role of either the Allies or the German forces and command them in some of the best tactical-level action available. The combat system is highly detailed, with a lot of depth. The vehicle’s armor is simulated, but the best part is the competency of the enemy AI, which is quite the cunning a-hole, setting up killzones, ambushes, setting up suppressive fire, taking advantage of fields of view, and maneuvering often to flank you. In my review, I give it a very solid 8.5 out of 10, but if I were to grade it today, the rating would be either a 9 or a 9.5.

8 – Command: Modern Operations

Command: Modern Operations is, without even a shadow of a doubt, the most complete, most complex, and most detailed simulation of modern-day warfare, period. There’s no other game that even comes close to it, to the point where its professional edition is used by dozens of militaries all over the world. The game features the largest database of units available in any game, and the last time I read about it, I think it numbered over 20.000 entries, from warships, weapon systems, planes, submarines, and all else in between. While the game features some ground combat, the bread and butter are maritime and aerial operations. Of course, all this is great, but it comes with a hefty price tag of 30 dollars, even on sale, but if you ask me, I think it’s absolutely worth it if you’re looking to lock in on a game and truly learn its systems. Just keep in mind that Command: Modern Operations also has a steep learning curve, but it is well worth the challenge.
