7 – Master of Command
Master of Command is the most recent game in this list and one of the best strategy games of 2025. A mash-up between traditional real-time strategy (RTS) and roguelike elements gave this title the necessary uniqueness and edge it needed to stand out amongst the crowd this year. Set during the 7-year war, players must command an army in a randomly generated campaign, fight several skimirsh, improve their forces by accruing experience, recruiting new units, equipping them, and unlocking new abilities for their officers. The fast-paced battles and the random nature of its campaign make it an addictive experience, where players will come back time and time again to try out new tactics, experience new armies, and attempt different builds.
6 – Sea Power: Naval Combat In The Missile Age
If the complexity of Command: Modern Operations scares you, or if you prefer a game with 3D graphics, instead of just having symbols moving around, then Sea Power: Naval Combat In The Missile Age might suit you just right. From the lead designer of Cold Waters, Sea Power is a game that lets players take control of NATO and Warsaw Pact naval and air forces, and proceed to undertake all kinds of operations, from air-strikes, ship-on-ship battles, counter-submarine operations, naval bombardments, missile-strikes, ground-support operations, and all else you can imagine, or set up with its amazing scenario editor. The game is currently in early-access, and it’s already beloved by the community, and the final version of the game is going to feature a fully fledge dynamic campaign system.
5 – SGS: Spain at War
The Spanish Civil War hasn’t received a lot of love, and very few games even attempt to portray one of the most defining conflicts of the first half of the 21st century. Fortunately, the team at Avalon has published SGS: Spain at War, which might very well be the most complete experience of the war you can play right now (the next year is seeing the release of War in Spain 1936-1939, which is looking like it’s going to be the definitive Spanish Civil War experience). If you enjoy the kind of gameplay SGS provides, which is board-game-like, there’s a lot to enjoy here, especially the game’s massive campaign, with one-week turns, for the whole 3 years of the war.
