A Lot of Trailers, Age of Wonders 4 Free To Play, and Age of Empires 4 Roguelike Mode

Welcome to your weekly digest of Strategy and Wargaming News! This week, we have a lot of new trailers! Trailer for Finest Hour, for Fields of History, Carthage: Bellum Punicum, and a couple of others! MicroProse announces two new games under its belt, and Wargame Design Studio players get a much-anticipated update! Stay tuned for this week’s Strategy and Wargaming News.

Gates of Hell: Finest Hour Trailer Goes Hard

Gates of Hell just released a banger of a trailer for their upcoming DLC called Finest Hour, highlighting some of the most impactful moments of the war for the British and Commonwealth armies. From the successful evacuation in Dunkirk early in the war, to the airborne operations of D-Day, and the desperate fights in Holland during Market Garden, the trailer goes hard as hell, with 2 of the most famous speeches of Sir Winston Churchill as voice-overs: “This was their finest hour” and “We shall fight on the beaches“.

Fields of History: The Great War

Were you aware of the existence of a brand new grand strategy game set in World War 2, created by the guys behind The Great War mod for Hearts of Iron IV? Me neither, so it really came as a surprise when Microprose announced they were publishing a new World War 1 called Fields of History: The Great War. From the looks of it, it has been in development for quite a while. Despite looking good on the trailer, this is the kind of game that, until I get my hands on it, is a sort of Schrodinger’s cat, but for wargames: It’s both good and bad until I play it. The game is promising a massive 3D map with 10,000 provinces, historical events, 250 technologies to discover, 300 types of units and equipment, espionage, politics, production, logistics, and army organization.

MicroProse Takes Command of Battlefield Commander WWII

We have more from MicroProse this week, but I have to be honest and say that when I played Battlefield Commander WWII during a Steam Next Fest (I think), the game didn’t particularly impress me. It barely worked at the time, and the flat graphics and stiff animations really made for an underwhelming experience. I’m not sure how the game is, but hopefully, the time in Early Access has been well spent. MicroProse is now publishing the game, so I’m interested to see if they can turn this around and make something special out of it.

Anno 117: Pax Romana Releases To a Mild Reception

One of the most anticipated games of the year has come out and was met with a very mild and mixed reception. Anno 117: Pax Romana, the city builder that places players in the shoes of a Roman governor, looked like it was going to become the definitive city builder set in antiquity. However, complaints about its buggy state, AI-generated images and voices in a triple-A production retailing for full price led to players voicing their complaints and giving it a mixed Steam rating. It’s truly a shame that triple-A studios will do this, when there’s no real necessity, just to save a couple of bucks. If you’re going to use AI assets, at least make your game cheaper.

Squad Battles: Advance of the Reich Gets New Graphics

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that Wargame Design Studio had bought the 3D terrain graphics of Burden of Command to start upgrading their graphics across the series, and how awesome that would turn out to be. What I didn’t expect was for the first update to come so soon! If you have Squad Battles: Advance of the Reich, you can go and download the update and try out these new, fantastic graphics for yourself. I love WDS games, but their titles really need this visual upgrade.
