Top 10 Wargames To Look Forward To – 2025 & 2026

7 – The Last General

The Last General is an ambitious and promising, upcoming Real-Time Strategy (RTS) modern wargame developed and published by the independent studio Wakety, with a planned release date in 2026. I have interviewed the game’s creator before, Alejandro Nunez, and was impressed by his ideas for the title. The game focuses on a blend of high-level operational strategy, economic management, some political decisions, and real-time strategy battles. The amount of things jammed together to create The Last General is enough to set it from the purely tactical wargames.

Players will command thousands of units, including armored vehicles, helicopters, artillery, and infantry across massive battlefields up to 400 square kilometers, with dozens of cities and towns to control. Success is tied to a modern war economy, requiring players to capture strategic points like cities and industrial areas to secure resources, manage production, build defenses, and infrastructure. I’m still curious to see how this will all play and come together, but despite my cautious approach to it, there’s no denying The Last General is the kind of wargame that’s going to leave a mark in the industry.

6 – Strategos

Here’s the pitch for Strategos: Do you want only the real-time strategy battles of Total War, but with a lot more complexity and realism, without any of the grand campaign stuff? Well, this is what this real-time tactics wargame set in classical antiquity set out to do. The game is focused entirely on large-scale battles, with thousands of units, and is currently targeting a 2025 release on PC, and it also has a demo available right now if you want to try it and check it out for yourself!

The core of Strategos is a deep, tabletop-style ruleset applied to real-time combat, simulating complex mechanics often abstracted in similar games. This includes detailed morale shocks, formation disorder, fog of war, and an advanced command and control system. The game boasts over 120 factions and 250+ unit types, spanning nearly a thousand years of ancient history. If you’re a Total War or a Field of Glory II fan, I would highly encourage you to have a look at Strategos, because you’ll certainly find something in it that you’ll enjoy, and the amount of factions and “what-if” scenarios it allows for is just incredible.

5 – Master of Command

I’m sure a lot of you are subscribers to the YouTube channel The Armchair Historian. The fact that one of the largest historical content creators around is creating a historical wargame and taking it to its massive audience cannot be understated. Enter Master of Command, a real-time tactical wargame set during the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), developed and published by Armchair History Interactive. It is currently scheduled for release on PC on October 27, 2025.

The game uniquely combines a persistent, roguelike real-time campaign layer with large-scale real-time tactical battles with a pinch of authenticity and realism. Unlike typical grand strategy games, where players are often more concerned with the entirety of their nation, Master of Command focuses on leading a single army, where every soldier and resource is scarce and precious. I know my weekend will be spent giving this one a proper go.
