5 – Ultimate General: Civil War
We went through several World War 2 wargames already, so let’s dive into the most defining conflict of American history, the Civil War, with Ultimate General: Civil War which is, in my honest opinion, an unmissable title to get during this Steam Summer Sale 2025, as it’s one of my favourite wargames of all time, and not only for me. For me and a lot of others. This acclaimed real-time tactical wargame thrusts you into the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, allowing you to command Union or Confederate forces through a dynamic, decision-driven campaign that while not at the same scale as something like Total War, certainly gets the job done in a much more streamlined and satisfying way. For such a realistic wargame, Ultimate: General: Civil War has, by far, one of the best interfaces in all of gaming’s history, alongside deep unit management (including soldier experience and equipment), and an AI that offers a genuine challenge, it perfectly balances historical authenticity with engaging, fluid battles where every flanking maneuver and artillery barrage feels impactful. I would highly advise anyone with a passing interest in playing a Civil War game to go with Ultimate General: Civil War. Its previous entry, Ultimate General: Gettysburg is equally excellent.
4 – Field of Glory II
My go-to recommendation for the Field of Glory series goes to the medieval title, but I decided to change things up a bit for this list and go back to the original, ancient-warfare-focused Field of Glory II because I just felt like it and it’s really cheap. This Slitherine-published title became an acclaimed turn-based tactical wargame when it came out, in 2017, for the way it recreates battles from 681 BC to 476 AD with unparalleled authenticity, allowing you to command historical armies from the Roman legions and Greek phalanxes to Persian hordes and barbarian tribes. With its highly detailed unit models, intuitive hex-based combat, and a deep, historically accurate ruleset based on the popular tabletop game, it’s perfect for both historical wargame veterans and newcomers seeking a challenging and rewarding experience.
3 – Panzer Corps 2
This list is filled with new and novel entrances! Now it’s time for an entry for fans of classic hex-based beer-and-pretzels wargaming and World War 2 strategy games, with the amazing Panzer Corps 2. This highly-rated turn-based strategy title combines deep, accessible tactical gameplay with stunning 3D visuals, putting you in command of powerful Panzer forces across historically rich campaigns. Whether you’re executing a swift Blitzkrieg or holding the line against overwhelming odds, the game offers hundreds of historically accurate units and robust mechanics that reward strategic thinking. 2 – Burden of Command
In number two is my favourite game of the year– so far- Burden of Command. If you can only get one game from this list, and like me, you love your World War 2 books and movies, this should be a no-brainer. Burden of Command is truly a groundbreaking WWII tactical leadership RPG that places players in the boots of a US Army Captain in the “Cottonbalers”, and challenges them to manage not just battlefield tactics but also the morale, loyalty, and psychological well-being of their men. Combat is authentic and unforgiving, with intricate hex-based mechanics that highlight the importance of battlefield control and command. But to me, it’s the rich narrative interludes and difficult moral choices between battles that truly set this historical wargame apart, exploring the profound human cost of war.
