The first one puts you in charge of the American forces of the 3rd Armored Division and the 2nd Rangers, as you fight your way to break through “Fortress Europe”, while also giving you the chance to play as the 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division and 116th Panzer Division in a six mission campaign to halt the allied offensive. That’s right, my favorite World War 2 video game is now getting my favorite World War 2 operation as well! If you haven’t heard about Burden of Command, then this is the time for you to stand at attention and listen to it! Unlike traditional wargames, this unique title delves deep into the psychological and moral dilemmas of leadership during World War 2. You’re the company commander of Nickel Company, of the 7th Infantry Regiment, also known as “The Cottonballers”, of the 3rd Infantry Division. As commander, it’s up to you to take care of your men as they fight their way through North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. It’s as much an intense combat wargame as it is a narrative roleplaying game (RPG), and it’s one of 2025’s stand-out titles, and it now ranks first as the best game at portraying the Second World War. The gripping narrative, the high-stakes combat (dead men stay, as you might imagine, dead), and the love of its history is something that tingles my brain in all the right ways.
