15 – Steel Division: Normandy 44
Steel Division: Normandy 44 is such a fascinating game. It can be, in equal ways, wonderful and true to life in certain aspects, like the painstakingly recreated maps of the game, and the way combined operations across several branches play out. Still, it’s also infuriatingly incomplete, lacking a proper single-player campaign and its lack of infantry-focused mechanics on a campaign which was mainly won on foot is such a letdown. It’s no surprise that its sequel, Steel Division 2, which zooms in into the open steppes of the Eastern Front was a lot more successful. But even with that in mind, Steel Division: Normandy 44 is still a groundbreaking real-time tactical wargame that plunges players into the heart of WWII’s D-Day with some of the most intense action at a larger scale, in what is essentially a tactical game leaning heavily into the operational side of things.
14 – SGS Overlord
Strategy Game Studio’s titles tend to follow a specific formula, and because of that, they have a captivated audience that just loves their simplicity and straightforwardness. If you want a strategy game that’s similar to what you would find in a board game, SGS Overlord stands out as a premier choice in 2025 if you’re looking to simulate D-Day. It’s a detailed turn-based wargame that covers the whole Normandy operations using 3-day turns, and the whole thing lasts from June 6th to September 3rd. Command Allied forces at the operational level, managing troop movements, and some of the historical challenges of World War 2 while making the best use of your forces and the cards you’ve been literally dealt throughout the game. SGS Overlord is not the most historically accurate game, nor is it a particularly in-depth experience, but it manages to offer a unique, more traditional and boardgame-like experience of commanding the largest amphibious invasion in history and getting it done in a single day. When it’s on sale, it’s easily one of the best recommendations for games focusing on D-Day in 2025.
13 – Battle Academy
Some time ago I said that I would eventually retire Battle Academy from my entries because the game is already 15 years old. I was then promptly reprimanded by the community, with arguments that such an accessible strategy game cannot, ever, go unrecommended, and that there’s no way it should be retired. I happily obliged, and I’m glad I did because this is an absolute classic and an engaging turn-based strategy game that brings the intensity and complexity of World War 2 to your screens while keeping the gameplay simple enough that anyone, with minimal experience, can pick it up and start playing it. While Battle Academy has a lot of missions and its campaign spans various theatres, the game features some compelling scenarios and community-created content that dive into the critical Normandy campaign and the fighting that followed D-Day. Perfect for players looking for an accessible yet challenging WWII wargame.
12 – Headquarters – World War 2
One of the more recent games in this list, Headquarters World War 2, is a visually stunning and strategically deep turn-based tactical game from Slitherine Games. Following closely the formula laid out by Battle Academy, it allows you to take command of your forces in critical battles across the Normandy campaign, during and after D-Day. Despite its apparent simplicity, Headquarters: World War 2 is a game that uses realistic tactics, cover, and field of fire, and it also features armor simulation and combined arms tactics. Its biggest draw is how easy it is to get going and how amazingly beautiful and detailed it looks. If you’re looking for a modern and engaging WWII strategy game that brings the combat of the D-Day period to life, Headquarters World War 2 is a strong contender among the best D-Day games to play in 2025.
11 – Panzer Corps Gold
Pretty sure that everyone who loves beer and pretzels wargames already has Panzer Corps Gold in their Steam library, especially since this is one of those games that’s always going on sale for pennies on the dollar! This comprehensive (or monstrous) package includes the original critically acclaimed game and numerous expansions, delivering a vast array of scenarios that put you in command of iconic forces across every major front. For D-Day enthusiasts, you’ll find a thrilling grand strategy campaign focused on the whole year of 1944 on the Western Front, meticulously recreating the strategic challenges and fierce engagements of the Normandy campaign, such as the beaches of Normandy, Villers-Bocage, Caen, Falaise, and Saint Lô. Praised for its accessible yet deep gameplay, Panzer Corps Gold remains a top contender for those seeking the best WWII strategy games in 2025, offering endless hours of operational fun and historical immersion, making it a must-play for fans of World War 2 games.
