What a week it has been. The Ukrainians have rushed into Russia, something that hasn’t happened since World War 2, there’s a new monkey pox threatening to close the world up again, and the US election is in full swing. Maybe it’s time for us to shut down from the real world for a while and enjoy what’s new in the strategy and wargaming genres of gaming (don’t forget to check page number 2!).
Sins of a Solar Empire 2
The cult classic real-time 4X Strategy game, Sins of a Solar Empire has a sequel and it finally left its beta testing phase on the Epic Games Store. Sins of a Solar Empire 2 came out on August 15th, and follows its predecessors’ footsteps rather closely, while building on its already solid and fun basis. You’ll command one of six playable factions across a dynamic galaxy, and you must manage your empire, lead your space marines into battle, build and maintain your fleet, and establish diplomacy missions. The game has been widely well-received by its loyal and fierce community, sporting an impressive 88% positive rating on Steam.
The game has native mod support and it’s currently 20% off its full price, costing $39.99 | 39,19€ | £33.59.
Ultimate General: American Revolution British Campaign
Early adopters of Ultimate General: American Revolution are now able to get their hands on the first year of the upcoming British campaign by accessing the unstable branch of the game. Just enter the code “unstablebranch” in the “Betas” properties tab of the game and you’re golden.
Age of Mythology: Retold Release Date
Age of Mythology is one of my favourite games of all time, a childhood darling that I boot up, at least once a year, to play a couple of missions and listen to what’s one of the best gaming soundtracks ever recorded (tanananam, tam, tananam!). It kind of disheartened me to read some of the Steam comments about poor performance, but other than that, the community reception of those who took part in the closed betas is very positive.
Age of Mythology: Retold comes out on September 4th and will cost $29.99 | 29,99€ | £22.49.
Call To Arms – Gates of Hell: Airborne
The best real-time strategy game of 2024 released a ton of details about its new up-and-coming DLC, Gates of Hell: Airborne. You’ll be jumping into the airborne actions of the Second World War in the boots of the soldiers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, as they fight their way through France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany.
The team behind Call to Arms is promising a “new feel to single-player missions”, as this will be more complex, cinematic and action-packed. The DLC is composed of 12 single-player missions, 7 new vehicles, and 100 new assets.
No price and release date have been announced, but if this DLC follows the same standards of quality as previous DLCs, then Call to Arms – Gates of Hell even further cements its position as one of the best World War 2 Western Front-focused titles of all time.
Band of Crusaders Is An Interesting Supernatural Game
This interesting, supernatural medieval strategy game caught my attention this week with its dark themes and monstrous abominations: In Band of Crusaders, the sinful nature of medieval Europe gave rise to demonic manifestations that threatened to consume the entire continent. You’ll act as the Grandmaster of a knightly order and your task is to lead a crusade against the Archdemons. The tactical battles take place in real-time, and “victory hinges on character synergies, smart use of abilities, and unit positioning”.
When not in combat you’ll be managing and getting to know your party, gathering and distributing resources, upgrading your units and exploring a dynamic map. It’s very reminiscent of games like Wartales and Battle Brothers.
While there’s currently no foreseeable release date, I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for this one.
