The Best RTS (Real-Time Strategy) Games On PC For 2026

5 – Total War: Warhammer Series

The Total War: Warhammer series stands as a monumental achievement in capturing the essence of the old Warhammer fantasy world. With its three entries, this Total War series has seamlessly blended grand strategy and tactical warfare, creating a game that is truly larger than the sum of its parts. It not only stands as one of the best RTS you can play today but is also heralded as the best modern Warhammer RTS available.

What sets Total War: Warhammer apart is its ability to deliver a gaming experience that transcends conventional boundaries. The inclusion of monstrous creatures, asymmetrical factions, and a myriad of unconventional classes introduces a level of spectacle and tactical complexity that few other games can match. This results in a unique RTS that constantly challenges players with interesting tactical conundrums, offering a depth of gameplay that remains unparalleled.

Despite the rocky launch of Total War: Warhammer 3, the series managed to recover its goodwill and the Immortal Empires campaign is probably the largest Total War campaign ever devised.

4 – Stronghold: Definitive Edition

Stronghold, even nearly a quarter of a century later, still stands as a great strategy game that every enthusiast of the genre should, at least once, experience. It remains a highly enjoyable and timeless game with design decisions that have proven to withstand the test of time.

Stronghold is one of my favourite games of all time (alongside Crusader) and one that I still play to this day and age, every year, without exception. Join those two together, and it’s not hard to see why S: DE is going to keep the Stronghold tradition of being installed in every system I own alive and kicking off the next couple of years.

The Definitive Edition is a lot of the same, but the new campaign and the low price of just 13 dollars make this a no-brainer if you played the original title two decades ago.

3 – Company of Heroes Series

The quintessential game of the RTS genre, Company of Heroes is unmatched even after a decade and a half of its release.

Emerging at the tail end of the World War 2 trend that swept the gaming industry in the late nineties and early two-thousands, Company of Heroes not only pioneered the genre but revolutionized it. Stripping away excess and honing in on combat mechanics, this game strives to encapsulate the tactical intricacies of small-scale engagements.

A beacon of innovation, Company of Heroes flawlessly incorporates the four Fs (Fire; Fix; Flank; Finish) of infantry combat. The cover system, a brilliant addition, introduces a new layer of depth and realism previously unseen in games. It remains a magnificent spectacle, witnessing US paratroopers skillfully navigating obstacles while under fire from German MG 42s.

With a flanking element deploying grenades into the enemy position, the vivid imagery evokes memories of Saving Private Ryan and the acclaimed HBO series, Band of Brothers.

While Company of Heroes 3 might have not lived up to the expectations set by the original and the several years of updates of Company of Heroes 2, I still think it’s a competent entry that tried to do things its way, for better or worse.

Experience the unmatched excellence of this enduring RTS masterpiece, still reigning supreme as the Best RTS on PC.

2 – Age of Empires IV

Every single time anyone mentions the Real-Time-Strategy genre, it’s inevitable that Age of Empires II is the game that instantly comes to mind.

However, the seminal RTS that was released way back in 1999 is slowly being replaced by its newer, more engrossing brother, Age of Empires IV.

I jumped into Age of Empires IV earlier this year and had an absolute blast playing through the campaigns, with the English and Russian ones being the particular high points for me. Age of Empires IV most likely will never reach the levels of fame, acclaim and influence its predecessors had, but it’s a very good game in its own right.

Each faction manages to feel particularly unique and the different evolutionary paths for crossing over ages are an interesting way to keep gameplay varied and engaging.

Get it for twenty bucks on sale and the game is worth it for the single player alone.

  1. The best RTS ever made in my opinion is by far supreme commander forged alliance modded. To this day nothing has been able to copy the intensity of that game when modded right.

    1. You may like to check out Beyond all Reason, a spirital successor to Total Anihilation and Supreme Commander still in development. You can freely download the alpha from their homepage and play it. I am in love with it 😉

      1. I played it a few years back when it was in very early access, I should give it a shot again.

    2. Can you suggest which mods or a site/community where they are listed?

  2. “when modded right”

    1. Which mods?

Don’t forget the mobile RTS games on Google Play Store and the Apple Store. War Commander Rogue Assault is pretty great in spite of the lags.

    1. Mobile Games are trash.

  4. Great article, but you missed out of my favourites RTS games, Halo Wars 2.

So that garbage Dawn of War 2 makes the most, but by far the best RTS that exists, the original Dawn of War (still one of the most pious ones in existence thanks to an amazing mixing community) isn’t even mentioned.

kind of invalidates the entire list

    1. That’s like, your opinion man.

    2. Wouldn’t exactly call DOW2 garbage, but 100% agree that DOW is easily one of the top games out there, especially after the Titanium Wars & Unification mods.

    3. Well, can’t seem to find the “post non-reply comment” button, so reply it is.

Another contender for the list: Zero-K. Indie, so not much for voice acting or fresh unit models – most of it is recognizable from Total Annihilation – but it’s got a lot of gameplay innovation that makes building up a massive army (or fortress) and maneuvering with it a lot more satisfying for people with mere-mortal APMs.

Plus, physics-based combat and terraforming: artillery can blast craters with more than just cosmetic effect, your faster units can outright dodge shots (the slow ones can still try), and you can set your workers to excavate trenches or raise walls however deep or high you can afford.

Definitely recommend if you enjoy Supreme Commander; still recommend but not as vehemently if StarCraft is more your thing.

  6. I really didn’t expect to see stronghold here. Honestly didn’t expect to see any of these old golden age classics here in 2024. I love the classics but its been decades, we played them over and over. We need some new games that are not being screwed by the capitalist gaming market of dlc and add-ons.

  7. Starcraft II and its not even close. Best RTS/ESport since release.

  8. how not to mention BAR ?? ( Beyond all reasons ) bloody FREE game and its amazing to whoever remember total annihilation would love this!!!

well I am probably biased, but that list makes little sense to me, if stronghold 1 is on the list warcraft 3 should be there same as StarCraft 2, I’d even argue that stronghold crusader is slightly better game compared to stronghold, we are also skipping on cossacs 3 which is original game but on new engine

  21. it’s crazy to not see any Starcraft, command and conquer, empire at war or homeworld games listed. I know they are older franchises but they made real time rts what it is today and all 4 franchises are better then a few on this list. Imo.

    No Generals or Tiberium Wars??

    Behave.

  23. I miss an honorable mention to the father of all full RTS: Dune II . All started there. Herzog might be first, but incomplete. Dune II put on all the concepts, and was damned fun to play.

Even before, “Centurion: Defender of Rome” set the standards for Total Wars, combining strategy map with real time land and sea battles. Technology allowed finally that concepts tried in Defender of the Crown and the Ancient Art of War (A “prehistoric” Total War series) where set up in a superb game.

  24. Good list. Starcraft 2 is wonderful and the succesor in construction Stormgate is worth a mention.

    Supreme Commander is great.

One of my favourites is Cossacks. It’s a great game but in limbo now.

  25. What about the Homeworld series ?
One of the best and innovative RTSs ever made. IMO 🙂

    1. Yeah, quite surprised not to see the Homeworld franchise here, but again it’s the author’s personal list.

  26. Surprised at the omission of Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 1 or Battle For Middle Earth 2: Rise of the Witch Kings. Also, if you’re still a AOE 2 fan, have you never tried Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds?

All of the above games have exceeeded their playability thanks to the modding community.

  27. Dawn of War II is in the list, but not Dawn of War 1, no Starcraft/Broodwar or C&C 3 Kane’s Wrath?

No one with knowledge can take this list serious!!!
