Strategy and Wargaming News – 9 August 2026 – Expeditions Samurai Out Now, Sudden Strike 5 New DLC, MENACE Gets Massive Update and Much More

New Wargame On War: Stalingrad Announced

Panzer Division Games’ previous success on Attack at Dawn: North Africa has emboldened them to take their premise of an easy-to-read, understand, and play wargame into the massive affair that was the Eastern Front of World War 2. Titled On War: Stalingrad, the game self-describes as “Finally, the Eastern Front – Made Playable”. The theatre that was once “too complex, too overwhelming” and had “Too many systems” is now changing with On War, “a game built to make operational warfare readable, understandable, and enjoyable, without sacrificing depth”.

The gameplay and announcing video you see above is certainly toeing the line close to what Attack on Dawn: North Africa was and looked like, so I’m fairly confident that it will be able to deliver on its premise. Another thing that’s important to mention is that Attack on Dawn was playable either by a traditional turn-based strategy approach or in real-time, and while the Steam page for On War: Stalingrad doesn’t clearly mention this option, the Steam tags clearly mention “RTS”, “Real-time”, “Real-time with pause”, “turn-based” and “turn-based strategy”.

No release date has been announced.

Sudden Strike 5 France: Road to Liberation DLC

Sudden Strike 5 has received its first DLC, and it’s all about the Western Front. Called “Road to Liberation“, this expansion provides players with 6 new missions (3 for the Allies and 3 for the Axis) based on the events of Operation Dragoon, or better known as the “Débarquement de Provence” – the Allied landings in southern France, in August of 1944. A total of 6 new unit types will be making their way into the game as well, including the Goliath and, of course, French infantry! While my first impressions of Sudden Strike 5 were not that positive, the new DLC looks like it’s being fairly well received by the community, sitting at an 85% Steam rating.

MENACE Terrain Update Is Stunning

MENACE Screenshot of the new terrain update

MENACE, the hardcore turn-based strategy game developed by the same team that worked on the classic Battle Brothers and published by Hooded Horse (and the best turn-based strategy game of 2026, so far), just unleashed a massive new update that overhauls the game’s terrain and adds new weapon models and alien skins. See some of the images below to compare how much the graphics have improved. I mean, this terrain update is quite something special.

This is the old marsh terrain:

Here’s the new marsh terrain:

A couple of new quality-of-life features also made their way into the game, such as Squad Leader State Growth Visualization and Weapon Comparison between light, medium, and heavy. This update is compatible with existing save games, so you have nothing to worry about. The game’s Early Access stay is highly promising, so I cannot wait for it to come out in its 1.0 version to do another review.

Krush Kill N’ Destroy 2: Krossfire and Xtreme To Received Updates After 3 Decades

Krush Kill ‘N Destroy Xtreme came out in 1997, and KKND 2: Krossfire in 1998, and now, in 2026, these beloved classics are being updated on Steam and GoG. Here’s a rundown of the improvements:

  • Several fixes and bug squashing;
  • Online multiplayer support through Steam;
  • Additional resolution support up to 4K;
  • Improved modding support;
  • KKND2 map editor compatibility for 64-bit systems;
  • Restored animations and sound effects;

The games are now available in big box format through Reboxy.

Wargame Design Studio Game of the Week

Wargame Design Studio’s Game of the Week is also quite hot! Panzer Campaigns: Tunisia ’43 will have players fighting the last Axis campaign in Africa, from their occupation of Tunisia up until their collapse in May 1943. The game has a traditional operational scale, with battalion- and company-sized units, 1km hexes, and two-hour turns. The game features 34 scenarios, playable by both sides, and a detailed order of battle for all the Axis and Allied forces that participated in the campaign, as well as some additions for hypothetical scenarios.
