My Favorite First-Person Shooters (FPS) Of All Time

4 – Turbo Overkill

It eludes me as to why Turbo Overkill is as underrated as it is. The moment I saw a gameplay video of it, it instantly clicked with me that this was going to be one of my all-time favorites. I just knew it. And I’m going to be straight up with you, I don’t even remember or care to remember the story of the game. I just know that you fight some sort of AI, and a dude with a metal skull for a face. But do you care about that if I told you that you have a chainsaw for a leg, can slide around the map at high speeds destroying hundreds of enemies, while akimbo two massive machine guns? You probably won’t even care about the story either; you just want to reach the next checkpoint where there are more enemies to kill. The maps are massive too, and new challenges are introduced constantly, and even when you think the game might become boring, you board a mech, or your talking hovercar, or get a new weapon, or a new upgrade. It’s just a perfect high-octane pace all from beginning to end.

3 – Hell Let Loose

If you’ve been around Strategy and Wargaming, you’re probably aware that I’m not a multiplayer kind of guy when it comes to strategy games. I never was, and I don’t think I’ll ever be. I don’t like the time constraints, the obligatory meta-builds, and having to learn mandatory exploits to avoid being steamrolled by some sweaty Redditor. However, when it comes to FPS, I transform into a whole new beast entirely, especially in historical FPS, where I’m known to be an absolute menace. Aside from War Thunder, where I’m constantly top 3 on the scoreboard, the other game where I truly excel- and yes, I am flexing my gaming skills here- is Hell Let Loose. This historical shooter set in World War 2 has you taking the role of an infantry or armored soldier, and fighting alongside your squad to capture objectives, or destroy the enemy by depleting its tickets. Give me a BAR or an MG42, and I’ll find a firing position so strong, not even King Arthur could pull me out before he got domed from 200 meters away.

2 – Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

Favorite titles are a very personal thing, and they can be our greatest for several reasons, ranging from mechanical perfection, an emotional story, or just a theme we really enjoyed. For me, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault ranks so high because it was a truly transformative game whose influence is still felt in my life today. Just the fact that I’m writing this in here is proof enough that the tentacle of MoH is still here, tugging at me.

It was Medal of Honor: Allied Assault that first sent me spiraling down history books, magazines, and movies, trying to find out more about the history of World War 2. This was compounded by the fact that the game came out during a time when the craze for World War 2 was at an all-time high, with several movies and TV shows scrutinizing the conflict from all perspectives and angles. It was quite an interesting ecosystem that the late 90s and early 2000s provided us with. While most of the game can be considered quite average by today’s standards, seeing the D-Day come to life in the early 2000s “realistic detail” is a memory that I don’t think I’ll ever forget. I have probably replayed that mission hundreds of times, and I have replayed the game over and over again for years. The Spearhead and Breakthrough expansions were equally amazing, and this was the true peak of the series.
