1 – Against The Storm – 91
At the number one spot, we find a pleasant, but not completely unexpected surprise, given the loud and glorious reception it received. The game is the Hooded Horse’s published Against The Storm, a roguelike (see? A trend!) city-builder that changed the genre in a way that solves a problem the genre had: how do you keep things interesting in a city-builder, when the majority of the fun is on the starting moments of the game, when you’re scrambling to set up your city, get everything together, putting up production chains, and solved a miriad of problems, all at the same time? Well, you add a roguelike element to it, a meta-layer of constant progression, and have the player constantly move from city to city to expand at their Queen’s desire, so that the challenge of starting anew is always there. Quite ingenious, and it worked amazingly well, with Against the Storm also being one of the top-rated strategy games on Steam.
Conclusion
There you have it, dear readers! The best-rated strategy games of the last decade, and what a decade it has been. New trends emerged, a ton of new remasters revived old classics, and they went on to become incredible successes. We saw the rise of a lot of genre-mixing, especially with roguelikes taking center stage (and the top spots). The strategy genre is in its best stage it has ever been since I started playing it, in the late 90s. Never in my life have I seen so many amazing games, so easily available, for so cheap. What a time it is to be a strategy fan!
