1 – Europa Universalis V
There’s no other game I’m more excited to play right now than the soon-to-be-upon-us Europa Universalis V (EU5), the next installment in the celebrated grand strategy series from Paradox Interactive, scheduled for release on November 4, 2025, for PC. EU5 is set to be a massive improvement over the previous iteration, giving players five centuries of history to shape as they wish. Starting at the beginning of the Hundred Years’ War in 1337, you can guide hundreds of nations through technological development, diplomatic turmoil, economic crises, military incursions, and so much more, preparing them for the Age of Sail and Exploration that follows during the 15th century and beyond.
The game’s systems have been massively enhanced with a new level of detail, including a larger, more granular map, a sophisticated Population (POP) system that tracks cultural and religious demographics within provinces, and the complete removal of the ‘mana’ system in favor of character-based skills. Players can now manage powerful Estates, engage in a deeper economic and trade model with dozens of goods, and even choose to automate certain complex systems to focus on their preferred aspect of empire-building. Europa Universalis V is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year in gaming, and from the looks of what we have been seeing lately, it appears it’s going to live up to all the hype.

Whether players seek the complex, personal struggle of army command, the intricate challenge of building a thriving ancient city, or the ultimate test of statecraft across centuries, these amazing strategy games confirm that historical strategy gaming remains a rich and relentlessly challenging domain for the ambitious player.
