Can you believe that Tooth and Tail, the lightning-fast indie strategy game you need in your library, is already 8 years old? I could swear that my day one buy was made just a couple of months ago! I’m just kidding, of course. This game came out during that weird craze when game developers were under the impression that to revitalize strategy games, they needed to “simplify” things except the core mechanics of control and combat. Fortunately, that one died out rather quickly, but Tooth and Tail is well worth it, especially when it’s on a juicy Steam Autumn Sale discount!
If you want a nice change of pace from the slow-burn, click-intensive Real-Time Strategy games, this is a streamlined RTS designed for quick, intense matches (think 5–12 minutes!) that you can even play with a gamepad or via glorious local split-screen multiplayer. You take on the role of a flag-touting, charismatic commander—a raccoon, a fox, or another anthropomorphic revolutionary—leading an army of flamethrowing boars, mustard gas-lobbing skunks, and paratrooper-puking owls! 7 – Balatro
Looking for the one indie strategy game that will devour your free time? Look no further than Balatro, the phenomenal poker roguelike that took the gaming world by storm, myself included! This is the kind of game that, as soon as you hear about it, you’re instantly surprised by the fact that nobody attempted it prior, because it’s so simple, yet genius. It mixes the simple rules of poker with the mind-bending, exponential growth of a deck-builder. You start with a basic 52-card deck, but quickly begin to discover Joker cards, Tarot cards, and Planet cards that stack up into truly game-breaking synergies. You won’t just be aiming for a straight flush; you’ll be building combos that multiply your score by thousands, making every poker hand an adrenaline-pumping, ridiculous powerhouse! It’s highly replayable, addictive, has an amazing art style, and it’s the perfect game if you’re looking for something to take on the road with you.
6 – Wargroove
Wargroove is not a perfect game, let’s get that out of the way right now, but it’s still a fantastic turn-based tactics strategy game that serves as a modern spiritual successor to the beloved Advance Wars series, but in a fantasy setting. Players command an army and its unique Commander unit across a grid-based battlefield, using their resources to build land, air, and sea units, strategically capturing towns for income, and aiming to defeat the enemy Commander or stronghold. Look, it’s just Advance Wars, ok? But with magical creatures instead of anti-aircraft missile launchers. The key strategic mechanic that sort of sets it apart is the “Groove”—a powerful, unique ultimate move for each of the game’s vibrant Commanders that can turn the tide of any battle, such as summoning units or teleporting across the map. It’s a nice, easy-going game that’s cute, simple, and just a pleasure to play. For the cheap price it’s currently going for? More than worth it.
5 – Northgard
If Wargroove struggled with garnering a dedicated fanbase, that cannot be said for this next entry: Northgard is a highly-regarded real-time strategy (RTS) game based on Norse mythology, where players lead a Viking clan to settle and conquer a mysterious, procedurally generated new continent. Combining elements of RTS, 4X strategy, and survival, the core gameplay centers on territorial expansion, careful resource management, and enduring harsh winters that dramatically increase food and wood consumption. The crux of the game is not faction-on-faction combat, like traditional RTS such as Supreme Commander, but players vs the environment and the threats that dwell on it. Very cool twist, and the constant DLC and updates coming out still to this day make Northgard one of the best indie games to buy on the Steam Autumn Sale of 2025.
