4 – SGS Imjin
The latest Avalon Digital release on this list is SGS Imjin War, a game that takes you back in time not to the Cold War, not to World War 2 or World War 1, heck, not even the 19th century, but all the way back to the 16th century, to depict the Japanese invasion of the Kingdom of Korea in 1592. If this isn’t a testament to how adaptable the SGS engine is, I don’t know what could qualify. As usual, the game takes a historical approach to the conflict. Players can take control of the forces of the Empire of Japan or the Kingdom of Korea, and the former must try to conquer the whole peninsula, while the latter has to hold on against the Japanese ground forces and cut them off from the sea.
3 – SGS Battle for Dien Bien Phu
SGS Battle for Dien Bien Phu covers the pivotal 1954 siege of the city, which is another grand-tactical wargame, but this one recreates the pivotal 1954 siege that marked the end of French colonial rule in Indochina, when France was defeated by the Vietminh. In this game, you can either control the forces of the defending CEFEO (Corps Expéditionnaire Français d’Extreme-Orient) or the Vietminh attempting to carry out the siege. A small change in scale was made for this entry, as the French troops are so few that they are measured in companies, instead of battalions. To compensate for their lack of manpower, the French fortunately have the strength of their air force. The game differs from other titles like Stalingrad because, while in Stalingrad there’s a relative balance of forces, here, the French are clearly outnumbered and certainly playing a defensive battle against an overwhelming force. Very few games tackle the Colonial wars after the Second World War, and hopefully, Avalon might just do a title on the Portuguese Colonial Wars. I think that is worth a game!
2 – SGS Spain at War
The Spanish Civil War is often seen as the conflict where the tactics and military doctrines, and in all fairness, SGS Spain at War is quite possibly the most comprehensive and detailed strategy game ever made on the Spanish Civil War. This is a massive, operational-level game that covers the entire conflict from 1936 to 1939 on a weekly basis, with an extraordinary level of historical fidelity and detail. You can command either the Nationalist side, with their veteran African Army, or the Republican side, which must build its army to fend off the threat of Franco. If you’re looking to play the Spanish Civil War fully, there’s a full campaign going over the entirety of the conflict.
